Hemacrit level 37.9. What kind of cancer will I most probably get? All other bloods are in range. Otherwise healthy adult. What to do next?

Recheck counts: Your Hematocrit is a bit low. But this does not imply it is due to cancer. There are many causes for mild Anemia (your diagnosis). I would advise you to recheck it and if the value declines, then you must see a doctor and make sure there is no blood loss like from a GI cancer (colon cancer can present this way). ...Read more

Blood results for healthy adult shows all within range except: Hemoglobin 13.1 (low): 13.2-17.1 in range; Hemacrit 37.9 & 38.5-50% in range. Go to ER?

Blood results for healthy adult shows all within range except: Hemoglobin 13.1 (low): 13.2-17.1 in range; Hemacrit 37.9 & 38.5-50% in range. Go to ER?

Of course not...: Unless one is having an emergency, one should not think of an E.R. Lab result numbers are just numbers, with little meaning if one does not have the whole picture. "In range" or "out of range" also mean little without the big picture. For example, if one is feeling fine and always has a hemoglobin of 13, that's great. If one usually has 16, but now has 13 after bleeding for 3 hours, that's bad. ...Read more

I recently have been diagnosed with a low neutrophil count 680mm3. Lymphocytes and all other wbcs and rbcs are are all in the normal range and I feel relatively healthy. Should I be concerned?

I recently have been diagnosed with a low neutrophil count 680mm3. Lymphocytes and all other wbcs and rbcs are are all in the normal range and I feel relatively healthy. Should I be concerned?

Probably not.: Normal neutrophil count is 1500, no risk of infection until <1000, and severe risk only <500, so 680 is only moderate risk. Causes are many. Sometimes this is transient and related to viral or other illness. Drugs can do this as a side effect. Autoimmune disease can be cause. The absence of problems in rbc or platelets is more reasuring, much less likely to be serious, such as leukemia. ...Read more

23 year old healthy female, 3 month ago all blood test normal. Now atypical lymphocytes 19.7 neutrophils Segmented 27.7 WBC 4.8 lab range 3.5-11 k/ul?

Could be normal.: Not sure why you would have blood drawn 3 months after having normal labs in a young and healthy female? There may be more to the story....? These labs could be seen as part of a viral syndrome. May be best to repeat them at some point. ...Read more

Mono-lymphocytosis: You have increased white blood cells, from lymphocytes and monocytes. Although benign reactions like infections or immune reactions are known causes, it is good to consult a hematologist and work your blood with smear and flow cytometry, clinical history and exams, and send these test for diagnosis to a blood specialist, like a hematopathologist. It is now data incomplete and too soon to tell.:) ...Read more

Does a healthy adult living in this country need to get pneumonia vaccinated after age 60?

Yes, after age 65: I know it can sometimes be hard to accept that if you are feeling perfectly well and have no medical problems, why would you need a pneumonia shot? But your natural immunity does wane as you age and....don't underestimate it...bacterial pneumonia can be rapid and deadly. Giving pneumonia vaccine to healthy older adults has been extensively studied: there is more benefit than harm. ...Read more

Do I have cancer since my recent Hemoglobin is 13.1 (otherwise am a healthy adult)?

Sounds okay: Depending on your gender and your lab, that may be reference range hemoglobin or just-below-reference-range. These ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside. If you feel well and are not losing blood into your gut, I wouldn't be concerned and suggest just keeping an eye on it. ...Read more

How many time should a healthy adult, who drinks a lot of water go to the toilet. When do you know for sure its constipation and you need medication?

Hard difficult BM: Constipation is a hard, difficult, painful bowel movement. Drinking a lot of water helps but so would more fiber in your diet. The frequency of the bowel movement is not as important as the consistency and pain associated with the bowel movement. A easily passed bm every three days would not be considered constipation by most mds. ...Read more

If a healthy adult male received minor shrapnel wounds from an explosion in a cold environment, what are the chances of him getting tetanus?

Immunized?: Hopefully the only context in which one would receive shrapnel wounds is during military service. All US military members are immunized against tetanus, so you should not be too concerned about tetanus. Whether military or not, check immunization history. Other skin infections would be more likely with puncture wounds, so maintain medical care and monitoring until resolved. ...Read more
