Just saw that 1/88 us kids has autism. I don't believe that. Is someone making money off the diagnosis or treatment?

As a matter of fact,: Not in the mainstream community, no. Developmental/behavioral pediatrics is a cognitive subspecialty &, therefore, labor-intensive, as are neuropsychology, psychology, psychiatry, & behavioral therapy. We are not well-paid by insurance companies for our time. If we had a brain-o-scope & could do a 12-minute procedure, it'd be a different story. The diagnosis has broadened but is still valid. ...Read more

Is it possible for lsd to be used as an autism treatment?

Are you kidding?: It sounds preposterous. Autistic patients are highly rigid & anxious. Taking a trip to the supermarket is overwhelming - so taking an "acid trip" would be especially torturous for autistics. I doubt that even timothy leary himself would have advanced such an idea - even during one of his own trips! ...Read more

If a mother has autism, will her baby have autism too? I heard a cause of autism is through genetics, so I'm just wondering?

If a mother has autism, will her baby have autism too? I heard a cause of autism is through genetics, so I'm just wondering?

Not always: There are some specific genetic abn that can be identified and are often transmitted from parent to child. Most often the genetic underpinning is complex and only has a possible 50% chance of being transmitted directly. Though autism has some genetic basis, it is far from being inherited directly, there are also many environmental factors. A parent with autism is likely to have kids with some issue. ...Read more

For what reasons don't doctors diagnose autism before age 3?

Sometimes they do.: It should be able to be recognized by age 3, but if symptoms are less noticeable, and iq is high, the diagnosis may not always be determined by age 3. In some cases the diagnosis is quite obvious to an experienced clinician by age 2. Feel free to seek a second opinion. Don't let the lack of a diagnose keep you from getting your child help. Is this new evidence that MMR may cause autism after all? Http://t.Co/pkcuulr

No.: No evidence at all for mmr, or any vaccine, being causative for autism. And, plenty of evidence to the contrary. Sad for your kid: You took a myth created as fraudulent research by dr wakefield (who lost his license because of the fraud) and now leave your child susceptible to an illness that can kill him. We are now finding genetic errors in kids with autism that are present at conception. There is no link to the mmr, although their are many that continue to push the idea. It is sad that parents are caught up in this battle. ...Read more

My brothers son has autism, is it likely my child will be born with autism? My husband doesn't have autism in his family

Autism's origins: New studies on chromosomal material have shown a number of autism cases related to sporadic changes (micro deletions or insertions) in the genetic code that probably occurred prior to conception. Of rare families with >1 affected child, this appears to be the case. Newly affected families have little if any chance of replicating that event, or sharing it across family lines. ...Read more
