I have severe headaches, back of head, lower right side.  Sometimes after too much alcohol, sometimes no trigger?  The pain can last for days.  Help.

Needs investigation : You need to check with your pcp, who should check your medical history, family history and any risk factors. You will possibly need ct or MRI brain to rule out any organic pathology. You also may have some withdrawal headache from the alcohol, or tension headache. It's important to know what alleviates the headache and what makes it worse than well.

When they are irritated, there may be a tender spot to pressure over them in the neck but the body may be most aware of the pain felt around and behind the eye — called referred pain. Occipital neuralgia: H/A in the back of your head about 1.5" off of the midline are called occipital neuralgia. Greater occipital nerve is inflamed and causing the pain typically. Underlying cause, however, is likely to be a problem with upper cervical discs. With "painkillers" not helping, have you have been seen by a headache specialist, rule out other problems. To the ER: I assume if you had MR venography that shows narrowing to full occlusion you have already saught care. See below: Any sinus congestion? Earache may have been part of URI including sinuses, which can cause referred pain to back of head. Try nasal irrigation with saline spray. If not being treated for high blood pressure, might add decongestant. Nsaid (advil/motrin/aleve/etc) can reduce pain & inflammation. If develop fever &/or purulent nasal discharge, see pcp for further evaluation. ...Read more
