Could MRI or CT scan detect brain cancer?

Could MRI or CT scan detect brain cancer?

Sure: Mri would be the imaging test of choice, though often we start with a ct. Ultimately, you'll likely need a biopsy to prove it's a cancer. ...Read more

Computed Tomography (Definition)

Ct uses xrays taken an 360 degrees combined with a computer to see"inside" the body. The table moves as the xray tube and detectors spin around the patient 10 times a second or more! the image shows excellent soft tissue detail, enhanced with injection of intravenous contrast or oral contrast. This way the body is shown in slices, in any plane, usually axially, but ...Read more

Can a non contrast head CT scan miss anything?

Can a non contrast head CT scan miss anything?

Yes: A ct scan with IV contrast will be more sensitive for detecting lesions than a non-contrast ct, and an MRI with contrast is even better than a ct scan. ...Read more

Could a CT scan show anything a MRI scan cannot ?

Could a CT scan show anything a MRI scan cannot ?

Yes: Some Doctors who interpret MRI exclusively in their practice will promote the idea that MRI is the best imaging technique for every condition. To a lesser extent, some Doctors will say CT. Some doctors swear by Ultrasound imaging. There are strength and weaknesses of each modality, with considerable overlap in information produced. And each modality has some advantage over others. ...Read more

What would a CT head scan show versus having a MRI head scan? And with or without contrast?

What would a CT head scan show versus having a MRI head scan? And with or without contrast?

Need to talk with : Your ordering doctor. Depends on what is being evaluated, and the differential diagnosis. Ct is a good quick screen for bleed, masses, skull fractures, etc. And MRI gets you good soft tissue details, and lets you better evaluate the gray and white matter, also allows you to evaluate bleeds, helps you tell if old or new bleed, also helps you see tumors, strokes (ischemic areas, atrophy, etc.). ...Read more

Is orbital CT scan and CT scan sinus the same?

Is orbital CT scan and CT scan sinus the same?

Not quite: The CT of the sinuses focuses in on the sinuses (though the radiation goes through the entire skull) and generally covers the entire set of sinuses (sphenoid, maxillary, frontal, ethmoid). The orbital CT will cover the eye sockets (and those pictures are zoomed in). While the sinuses lies behind the eyes (& so they overlap), the focus & coverage of these scans are slightly different. ...Read more

Can CT scan without contrast show brain aneurysm?

Can CT scan without contrast show brain aneurysm?

Unlikely: Ct scan without contrast is unlikely to show an aneurysm unless it is very large and is calcified. A ct angiogram is a better study to visualize an aneurysm. ...Read more

What does CT scan of head without contrast show?

Many things.: It can detect many conditions. Ct is particulaly good at detecting bleeding in the acute setting and hydrocephalus, and some masses. It's not nearly as good as MRI for looking at small structures and white matter disease. Both ct and MRI are usually more sensetive and specific when contrast is given. ...Read more

Lung tumor CT scan with or without contrast?

Lung tumor CT scan with or without contrast?

Either: I usually do them without so I don't expose the patient to the contrast, which can injure kidneys. However, if the tumor is close to the mediastinum, I usually do order it with contrast because it's often difficult to tell the various structures apart without it. It also helps to identify lymph nodes. ...Read more

Could a CT scan without contrast show an aneurysm?

Yes: The contrast is to show blood flow. While some aneurysms have wall to wall flow, most are lined by thrombus, with only the central portion of the aneurysm showing flow. The CT scan can show the wall of the vessel, as well as flow. An arteriogram only shows flow. ...Read more

What would an MRI of my head show that a Sinus CT Scan and a Maxiofacial CT Scan didnt?

What would an MRI of my head show that a Sinus CT Scan and a Maxiofacial CT Scan didnt?

Quite a Lot: MRI is more helpful for soft tissue problems of blood vessels, inflammation, demyelination of brain tissue, and fluid collections. It seems you are undergoing a lot of tests, but without a clear diagnosis you can not be certain of the correct treatment. Ask your physician to explain the different treatments these tests will suggest. Tests are not useful, solely, because you have symptoms. ...Read more

Can a CT scan of the head without contrast dye detect brain aneurysms?

Can a CT scan of the head without contrast dye detect brain aneurysms?

Yes: While plain ct scan is not the best test for aneurysm, large aneurysms can potentially be spotted. Mri is a better test, especially when blood vessels are looked at as well. ...Read more

Can CT scan without contrast show any brain tumors?

Sometimes: Brain swelling, hemorrhage and mass effect can be noted on a head ct without contrast. Also, some tumors have calcification a which can be seen in a head ct. Smaller and lower grade tumors can sometimes be missed on a head ct without contrast. ...Read more

Does a CT scan without dye detect an unruptured brain anuerysm?

Does a CT scan without dye detect an unruptured brain anuerysm?

Not likely: Most intracranial vascular anomalies, including aneurysms, require IV contrast to be seen on ct head. However, ct without contrast is 90% sensitive for intracranial bleeding. The risks of IV contrast for ct include kidney injury and allergy to contrast dye. Good luck! ...Read more
