Not very good: Your numbers are not very good and put you at increased risk for coronary artery disease. It is unlikely that you will get much improvement from diet alone unless you are highly motivated. You could try the Esselstyn diet. You should definitely establish with a health care professional and initiate drug therapy if diet is not effective in three months. ...Read more
HDL, or high density lipoprotein, is a molecule in the body that is responsible for the transport of lipids (fats) from various organs including blood vessels back to the liver for processing and possible elimination. Because it helps prevent accumulation of lipids in blood vessels, HDL cholesterol is ...Read more
Need Information: Cardiovascular (cvd) risk is related to the number of LDL particles (ldl-p) and HDL particles (hdl-p). When ldl-p is high or hdl-p is low cvd risk is elevated. Ratios report an LDL number divided by hdl. However, cvd risk can vary by 40% a the same ratio value. This is because you can get the same ratio with different LDL or HDL values. It is best to know the ldl-p and hdl-p individually. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
CholesterolIncorrect: Cholesterol is a fat made by every animal cell on planet, part of every cell membrane, allows animals to move &has nothing to do with cardiovascular disease. The correct issues are low density lipoproteins &high density lipoproteins, complex proteins which transport all fat molecules around our body in the water outside cells, get an NMR lipoprotein test, then focus on correct issues. Good luck. ...Read more

How accurate is the predictive value of the chol/hdl ratio? Mine is 2.5. Does that mean I have a low risk of having a coronary event?
Did a cholesterol test & i don't know how to read it & total 144, HDL 35, total/hdl ratio 4.1 is this normal, high or low & BP 120/78?
Got some routine bloodwork back. My chol/hdl ratio was 2.5 and my ldl/hdl ratio was 1.1 is this something to celebrate or should I be concerned?
Cholesterol Ratio: The total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol ratio is a number that is helpful in predicting an individual's risk of developing atherosclerosis. The number is obtained by dividing the total cholesterol value by the value of the HDL cholesterol. The ideal cholesterol ratio (total chol/hdl) is about 3.5:1. Your ratio is very good. ...Read more

Yes: your lipid panel needs to be modified, hopefully by lifestyle changes, but you might need anti lipids,if treatment pending a concerted 6-12 month trial of diligent low saturated fat diet (less than 7 g sat fat/day) low glucose, 4x/week exercise (even walking briskly 30 min). U need to worry esp if u r of South Asian descent. HDL goal >40 mg/dl at least; LDL ...Read more
Tot chol/ HDL ratio 4.9, vldl 66mg/dl, LDL 39mg/dl, HDL 27mg/dl, trigs tot 328mg/dl tot chol 132mg/dl doc was perplexed. Why?? Is this not normal
Age 16, T cholesterol 370mgh/dl , HDL 1.16, LDL 7.36, T Chol/ HDL ratio 7.91, sugar level normal.. Is this very high
Something isn't: adding up. Perhaps typo...your ID info says age 76, not 16. Total cholesterol is given in mg/dl (370 IS high), but other values in mmol/l. However LDL of 7.36 mmol/l (284 mg/dl) is QUITE high, too. Unfortunately your 1.16 mmol/l (44 mg/dl) HDL isn't very far into the protective range. Ratio is high. Notes say you have had heart stent so cholesterol needs to be much lower;need meds. Review with Doc ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Had a physical and it came back with these high number 217 total Cholesterol, 5.7 Cholestrol/HDL ratio and 288 Triglyerides is this bad?
Could be better: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would better if both cholesterol and triglycerides were lower. If you are overweight, try to lose weight, not easy. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. ...Read more

Yes, meds+lifestyle: What is your BMI? Have you gained weight? This may affect your numbers and suggests a remedy as well. In addition to lipid medications, you need to be screened for type 2 diabetes and fatty liver. Beginning a proper diet and exercise program and losing weight weight will help as well. If you smoke, get help to quit. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

My uric acid test gave a result of 0.75 which I believe is high & my triglycerides were 2.9 with chol/hdl ratio at 4.6. Is it cause for concern ? Thks
Slightly high all.: Usually uric acid is measured in mg/dl. Normal values range between 3.5 and 7.2 mg/dl. If pt has hx of gout or elevated uric acid in the past 7.5. Mg/ dl is not too much. Sometime leves go up with diuretics. The ideal ratio for the body should be 3.5:1 or below. Average: Your HDL chol is low- the only way to improve is to exercise daily and to keep ideal body weight. Keep the LDL level around 70 if you have strong fh of coronary artery disease. Your triglycerides are borderline high which can be corrected by daily exercise and proper diet.(low in carbohydrate and sweets). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Exercise: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your LDL is higher than desired. You should reduce intake of saturated fat and exercise, about 150 minutes/week. You may recheck in a year or so. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually.
