Is crestor better than zocor (simvastatin)? (when tg high HDL low LDL ok). Thanks

Is crestor better than zocor (simvastatin)? (when tg high HDL low LDL ok). Thanks

Not better-different: Both are statins, and work through the same mechanism to lower cholesterol. Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a more potent statin than zocor (now generic as simvastatin). Crestor (rosuvastatin) is more hydrophilic (water friendly), and Simvastatin more lipophilic (fat friendly). Crestor (rosuvastatin) may also have a better drug-drug interaction profile but there are no head to head studies comparing one to the other with regard to heart dz. ...Read more

Hdl (Definition)

HDL, or high density lipoprotein, is a molecule in the body that is responsible for the transport of lipids (fats) from various organs including blood vessels back to the liver for processing and possible elimination. Because it helps prevent accumulation of lipids in blood vessels, HDL cholesterol is ...Read more

Isolated finding: Maybe measured with too small a cuff. All the other data you mentioned looked OK. Stop obsessing over single numbers! One has to look at findings in a context. You can make a virtual appt and we can discuss in more detail if you want to. ...Read more

If my HDL is low what can I do to help bring it up?

If my HDL is low what can I do to help bring it up?

Lifestyle measures.: The best way to raise cardioprotective HDL is cardiovascular exercise. Shoot for forty or forty-five minutes daily. Supplementation with no-flush Niacin may help as well, 2000 to 3000mg daily in divided doses. Fish oil supplements may help this as well, as healthy fats can raise the HDL. ...Read more

Cholesterol- 175, Triglycerides-50, LDL-100, but my HDL was low at 38... Is this a problem?

Cholesterol- 175, Triglycerides-50, LDL-100, but my HDL was low at 38... Is this a problem?

Not ideal, but...: We would ideally prefer a higher HDL, but the overall picture seems pretty positive. Pursuing a "heart-healthy" lifestyle, with healthy eating habits, regular exercise and avoidance of bad habits like smoking or alcohol or drug abuse would certainly be advisable, and that may lead to improving HDL levels over time. Even so, your total cholesterol:HDL is still less than 5 (as preferred). ...Read more

Total cholesterol 164, hdl 26 low, ldl 108, trig 152. Is my hdl too low. What does that mean? Hiw can I raise it?

Isolated low: HDL, by itself, does not mean much, if you have no other risk factors. Vigorous exercise is the only way of raising it. There is no medication that will do it. If you have other risk factors, you should ask your doctor to see if your LDL needs attention. ...Read more

Cholesterol is 184, triglycrides is 108, HDL 37 and LDL 125. Should I be worried? I know my HDL is low. I'm a 22 year old male

Depends: The interpretation of a lipid panel differs from patient to patient. All of the above levels are acceptable in a person with no medical problems. Patient with health issues such as heart disease and diabetes are encouraged to have lower LDL levels. If you have no other health problems then rest assured! ...Read more

Hdl 31mg low triglyceride s 334mg high cholesterol 209 high. Is this bad? Please ezplain..

Lipid Abnormalities: Bad is not a common word we use in medicine. This scenario is a very common type of cholesterol problem. The biggest issues with these numbers are that your lifestyle numbers--the numbers you can change--are all out of whack and putting you in danger. Eating right, exercising correctly and limiting your sugars will lower the triglycerides and raise the hdl. This is vital for you at your age. ...Read more

My husband age 44 is in great health exercises 4-5 times a week and has an active job. We eat very well balanced healthy diet yet his HDL is low?

Could be genetic.: The best way to raise cardioprotective HDL is cardiovascular exercise. Shoot for forty or forty-five minutes daily. Supplementation with no-flush Niacin may help as well, 2000 to 3000mg daily in divided doses. Fish oil supplements may help this as well, as healthy fats can raise the HDL. If my regular CRP (not hscrp) level is 0.10, HDL mildly low at 42, LDL and triglyc are low - does that mean I have a low risk for a heart attack? 26/f

If my regular CRP (not hscrp) level is 0.10, HDL mildly low at 42, LDL and triglyc are low - does that mean I have a low risk for a heart attack? 26/f

Yes: Females in your age group have an extremely low incidence of coronary artery disease. The chance of having heart attack is extremely low and would not likely be the result of typical coronary etiology of heart attack i.e. Plaque rupture. However heart attacks can occur from coronary dissection or other rare conditions. Pregnancy associated causes and blood clotting disorders are also rare. ...Read more

30y/o F w/ HDL of 38, LDL 91, triglyceride 115 & total cholesterol of 152. Dr said it was normal but the lab report said my HDL is low. I'm confused! ?

Both R true: Your HDL is technically just a bit "low" but your total cholesterol, LDL and TGs are normal - hence both statements are true! From your doctor's perspective, your HDL isn't abnormal enough to justify treatment even if we had an effective drug (we don't). Daily exercise is a healthy lifestyle and it raises HDL so it's definitely recommended. Beyond that, forget it. It's an inherited characteristic. ...Read more

83 yr female. Ct for kidney stones shows calcifcation abdominal aorta and ivc. Is this normal for age? Ldl good HDL slightly low. Bp good. A1c 5.7

Normal for age: This is a normal finding for your age. Unless there is calcification that is separated from the arterial wall, I would not be concerned about this. It does suggest that you will be prone to systolic hypertension (the top number) and that it might be hard to treat. ...Read more

What are the causes of high triglycerides and low hdl?

Sweets & alcohol: Most common cause is high intake of sweets (candy, juice, pop, gatorade, etc.), uncontrolled diabetes (high blood sugar), and consumption of alcohol (which our body process as a type of sugar). Avoid sweets, especially those in liquid form, control diabetes (if you have it), limit alcohol to 1-2 drinks per day at most. Exercise at least 5 days a week, keep a healthy weight. ...Read more

Is there a link between low HDL and accutane?

Is there a link between low HDL and accutane?

Indirectly: Accutane incresases levels of a protein called apociii, which is an inhibtior of another protein apocii. Apo cii is the binding site for an important enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which when acts on triglyceride containing particles removes or hydrolyzes triglycerides (tg's). Too much apociii (via accutane) raises tg's. High tg's are a very common cause of low hdl. Thus Accutane lowers hdl. ...Read more

Recommended food for high tg, LDL and low HDL patients?

Back to basics: Thanks for your data! Numbers all look pretty good. Tg is only mildly elevated and would respond best to low calorie diet with focus on reducing high glycemic index foods and fructose. My ldl, HDL are very low below normal range but my triglyceride is very high. What should I do?

This combo a concern: High triglycerides are a very common cause of low HDL cholesterol and in many cases low or normal LDL cholesterol. This condition is often seen in patients with obesity, pre-diabetes or diabetes (insulin resistance), and in combination with other cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension. Why is low HDL cholesterol bad for you?

Why is low HDL cholesterol bad for you?

Complicated: The conventional wisdom is that HDL helps to remove cholesterol from your arteries and epidemiological studies clearly show that the lower the hdl, the higher the risk and vice versa but drugs that raise the HDL have had disappointing results making the conventional wisdom suspect. It may just be a marker for something else. Bottom line: we're not sure why but it is. ...Read more

What does it mean if I have low HDL cholesterol?

Heart disease risk.: Hdl (high density lipoprotein) protects the body by removing excess cholesterol from the walls of arteries. A high HDL (>60 mg/dl) can protect the body from heart disease. A low HDL (<30 mg/dl), on the other hand, is a risk factor for developing heart disease. A patient with low HDL can exercise, lose weight, or take medication to raise it. ...Read more
