Several types: In general terms the recommended treatment is 3-fold. First is interferon. It is an injection done weekly. Second is a medication called ribaviron (3 pills twice a day). Finally...A new class of meds for hcv called integrase inhibitors. I like incivik. Its 2 pills 3 times a day. This last drug goes 12 weeks. If you become undetectable then you go 6 months..Otherwise you go 12. ...Read more

Incomplete treatment: Conventional treatment regimens for hcv have many potential side effects. Many of these will reverse once treatment ceases. There is no significant consequence however to prematurely terminating hcv treatment prior to its completion, other than the expectation that viral cure will not be achieved. If you can tough out the side effects and you're showing early treatment response, finish treatment. ...Read more

Packaging...: Pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a) and pegintron (peginterferon alfa 2b) are two drugs fda approved for treatment of chronic hepatitis c. They are slightly different in their chemical composition but studies indicate they are virtually equally effective in what they do and have very similar side effect profiles. Insurance usually drives which of the two is preferred on their formulary. ...Read more
Very little: These are both long acting forms of pegylated interferon that can be injected once a week. Cure rates using each are similar. Pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a) has been given a slight edge in cure rates by kaiser and veteran's admin studies as well as the uspstf. Most hepatitis c drug companies that combine their new drugs with interferon and Ribavirin use pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a). But your provider will use what he/she is used to. ...Read more
How fast can we expect the new treatment for HCV and liver cirohsis to be out for general public?
2-3yr: We expect new medications for the treatment of hcv genotype 1 in a few years. It is less clear for the other genotypes. Currently some patients with cirrhosis and hcv can be treated with the new regimen that has become available over the past 2years. We do not known if future treatments will be available for cirrhotics. ...Read more
Please answer! what kind of side effects remain after the completion of HCV treatment by pegasys (peginterferon alfa 2a) + ribaverine?
After one month of a 6month treatment for hep c genotype3 my HCV is undetectable and no viral load detectable! Does that mean im cured?
No: It is great that you are viral titers are undetectable at this point but it is too early to say it is a cure. Finished entire course of treatment as this gives you the greatest likelihood of success. I know that it is uncomfortable, nauseating and feels like the flu, but you already made it through part of the treatment and it only made sense to finish and guarantee a greater chance of cure. ...Read more

If finished 42 vials of peg-intron 150 for treatment of HCV & i still have 136 viral count active after the 36th vial do I have to complete to 72 vial?
I would say yes: There are 3 medication types to treat hep c. The interferons as you already know. Ribaviron (in conjunction) and the integrase inhibitors (you didn't mention if you had this as well). A viral load of 136 is very low..In fact your almost undetectable. I would say yes..Because remember you'll be on a 48 or 52 week treatment regimen. You have a decent way to go yet. ...Read more

Can medical marijuana help prevent retinal detatchment due to HCV treatment? I tore my retina in 3 places 16 years ago
Probably not: This should be discussed with your eye doctor. One thing to keep in mind is that interferon alfa is contraindicated with retinal problems, but the new treatments that should be available in the next 1-4 years (depending on certain factors) will be pills and no interferon. These might be safer. Your doc can help you figure out risks and benefits. ...Read more
I am suffering with kidney failure and on capd. I am also suffering with HCV and i had 5 months interferon treatment, but no response of injections. Any other treatment?
See below: Genotype 1 of hcv is very resistant to treatment. You cannot get Ribavirin as it cannot be used in dialysis patients. Assuming you got adequate dose of interferon and there is absolutely no response, there is no other treatment. If you had some response at least, then you may benefit from prolonged duration of treatment. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
