Having A Wet Cough After Tonsillectomy
Son (7) had tonsillectomy on tuesday now low grade temp (~100 with tylenol (acetaminophen) 3 q4h) and wet mucusy cough. Is this ok? He's not drinking or "eating" much
Encourage activity: A fever after surgery is frequently atelectasis, a wrinkle in the lung from not taking deep breaths. Get him up and around. Plain tylenol (acetaminophen) every 4 hours frequently works better at this age than tylenol (acetaminophen)# 3. Use Ibuprofen if your surgeon says it's ok. Push fluids 20 minutes after pain meds. Dehydration causes more problems than most anything else after tonsillectomy. Don't worry about not eating. ...Read more

No cough med: That bark cough is not from the lungs but from airway irritation and swelling right below the vocal cords in her trachea. Likely irritated from breathing tube she had in during the surgery. COUGH MEDS WON'T HELP! Do excessive amounts of humidity...take her in shower, run humidifier, boil water on your stove, go to a tropical rain forrest. Anything to increase humidity in the air she's breathing ...Read more

See your doctor: Assuming "wet" means you produce sputum (phlegm) when you cough, this is something to discuss with your doctor. Whether it needs treatment at all, and with what medications, depends on the likely causes and is influenced by other things, e.g. color of sputum, fever, etc. If you are a smoker, try to stop. In any case, contact your obstetrician for her advice. ...Read more

12 days after my tonsillectomy and I can't stop coughing. I think I have bronchitis. Will this cause bleeding or complications?
DeepThroatInTrouble: It's possible that any explosive action could loosen some blood vessels in the area where the tonsils used to be. At twelve days it's much less likely than at, say, 3 or 4 days, but still possible. Take a good look and make sure it hasn't been oozing. That may be the cause of the cough. In your situation, though, you need a good cough medicine to ease your miserable rehab. Maybe an antibiotic. ...Read more
