Have You Prescribed Brotapp Dm In 4year Olds Is It Safe
What is the difference between dimetapp dm and brotapp dm for children age 4? Are there any harmful side effects with brotapp dm in this age group?
No important ones: For at least the last decade we have recommended parents not use these cough/cold medications in kids before school age if then. They were once a prescription med that eventually made it to OTC status. Over time we realized more kids were self medicating and ending up in the ER with toxic overdoses. The research eventually showed they don't do much, other than give parents something to do. ...Read more
A doctor prescribed my 2 year old a half tsp of rondec dm syrup every 4 to 6 hours as needed is this a safe dose?
Cough medicine: Cough/cold medications do not help relieve the symptoms they are meant to take care of. In short, they are useless for children below 6 years old. In addition, the child is exposed to bad side-effects from them like drowsiness, irritability, hyperactivity. Best medicine is lots of fluids, saline for the nose and possibly a cool mist humidifier in his room. Try honey for the cough. ...Read more

Define "safe": This & similar medications have been used for years after approval of the FDA. Many were prescription only until eventually moving to an over the counter status. In size appropriate doses they are considered safe. Studies over the last decade or so show little if any benefit to kids under 12. ER visits due to child directed overdoses led many to consider them more a threat than a benefit. ...Read more
My just turned 3 year old son was prescribed Bromfed dm 2.5ml every 4 hrs. I accidentally gave him 5ml. He weighs 34lb. I gave it 1.5hrs ago and he se?
It happens: At that weight the amount shouldn't hurt him. It may well show some side effects. Since it is a combination med it migght make him hyper or groggy depending on his sensitivity to the components. I find little value in these products and don't use them under the age of 6. Far too many kids decide to self medicate at some point trying to mimic what mom gives them to help them "feel better" ...Read more

My daughter's pediatrician prescribed her Bromfed (brompheniramine) dm cough syrup as needed for cough and she is only 2 yrs old. Is this cough syrup bad for her?
Not recommended: The fda, as well as the aap do not recommend cough/cold products for young children, as they have not been shown to be effective, and may have side effects. I'd suggest vaporizer, fluids, suction nose with saline, and if over 1 yr, a tsp of honey. Don't use honey if less than 1yr, as there is a risk of botulism. ...Read more
