My daughter (16m) got a cut on the crown of her nose. I put a little Neosporin for kids on it. Would it harm her if she got it in her eyes or mouth?

Not harmful: Although the package may say that it is recommended for external use only, the antibiotics present in Neosporin can be prescribed orally and the ointment base is similar to chapped lip products and prescription eye ointments. Do have your daughter evaluated for infection if the area becomes red and swollen. ...Read more

Simple Care: When our protective skin is injured/opened, then the delicate internal environment is exposed to the harsh external environment. Covering it with a clean dressing is the way to go changing it every other day or so. Avoid scratching. Anti-itch creams help. Also, stay away from peroxide, alcohol, betadine, hibiclens, bleach solutions and other irritating things. ...Read more

I have a small red spot, left side of penis head/crown. It seems to get better when I put neosporin on it. Could it simply be an abrasion or an std?

Tough to say: Without an exam and testing, it is really impossible to say, but the fact that it improves with antibiotic meds is encouraging for an abrasion like wound. Get checked for the definitive answer. ...Read more

Wash: Neosporin is a good topical antibiotic, but it is not what you need here. Unless the wound looks infected (red, hot, painful, draining fluid/pus) there is no need to use an antibiotic. If you do see these changes you should see a doctor. In general for stitches: wash with soap and warm water, pat dry, loose adhesive bandage, avoid submersion/excessive moisture. ...Read more

Vaseline: Large studies of ointments on sutures indicate no benefit from neosporin or bacitracin. They fail to prevent infection. They are common sensitizers, among the most common things causing allergic reactions. Throw them away. Lubricate the wound with vaseline or Aquaphor and rinse with water twice a day. ...Read more

Throw away neosporin: Comparative studies show that sutured wounds heal better with vaseline (or aquaphor) than with neosporin or Bacitracin or any antibiotic. Also avoid peroxide, alcohol, iodine as these interfere with wound healing. You do not indicate the site or nature of the surgery, nor the degree of skin separation. I routinely use bioclusive membrane to strengthen a recent incision. Water is probably good fo. ...Read more
