Duloxetine for Fibro: There are now three drugs that have been approved by the fda for the treatment of fibromyalgia-duloxetine (cymbalta), lyrica (pregabalin), (pregabalin) and milnacipran (savella). Studies has shown no difference in effectiveness between savella and cymbalta. We usually use one of the two along with lyrica (pregabalin). Hi! I'm switching from a daily dose of 30mg Duloxetine to 20mg Fluoxetine. Do I need to taper off Duloxetine, or can I switch immediately?
Switching Medication: I understand your need for improvement in Depression and Anxiety. Duloxetine (Cymbalta) is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor antidepressant (SSNRI). Fluoxetine is a SSRI medication. See Psychiatrist and inform about side effects of Duloxetine, and discuss risks of sudden withdrawal from it; discuss benefits and side effects of Fluoxetine; and Therapy for stresses in life. ...Read more
Differences: These two medicines share similarities, but they have different chemical structures, leading to different actions on the nervous system. Fluoxetine almost exclusively acts on the neurotransmitter serotonin, while duloxetine has a mixed action on both serotonin and norepinephrine. This difference will sometimes result in a person doing better with one medicine versus the other. ...Read more
Hi IV recently gone from 40mg fluoxetine a day to starting duloxetine 30mg. Is duloxetine stronger than fluoxetine ? Or is 40mg Prozac stronger ? Thnx
Responses vary: Each individual patient responds differently to each medication, so there is no way to directly compare fluoxetine and duloxetine or to predict how you will respond to a particular dose. In general, dosing of fluoxetine ranges between 20-60mg, while duloxetine is typically dosed between 30 and 60mg. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is there a way to go off cymbalta (duloxetine) by just switching completely over to Prozac the first day and continuing with prozac?
To avoid: Ssri discontinuation symptoms while making the change - a cross titration could be useful. In other words, reducing the dose of one while increasing the dose of the other. And doing this progressively until you are off the first medication and you get to the target dose of the second medication. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I'm switching from cymbalta (duloxetine) to Prozac so i can get off do I really have to take Prozac before i can go off it as we'll. Just using Prozac as a halfway?
Check game plan.: Everyone who is being tapered from Cymbalta (duloxetine) does not have to hake prozac. However, there may be good reasons why your doctor wants to switch you to this medication . It is possible that this medications will work better for you. It is always best to talk it over with the prescribing doctor so you understand the game plan. ...Read more
What is the easiest way to transition 30mg of Cymbalta (duloxetine) to 20 mg of Prozac.Been on 30mg for 3 months now-from 60.dr wants to just stop cym & start proz?
After i switch to Prozac after a week of transition from cymbalta (duloxetine) would i be able to wean off Prozac without issues or keep take for a month then wean?
Work w/your doctor: I don't know what your psychiatrist has in mind for your treatment, so it's not appropriate for me to guess about that. You really need to discuss this withhim or her. However, Prozac (fluoxetine) is a very long-acting medication and is sometimes used to taper from other ssri antidepressants. Smaller increments of Prozac (fluoxetine) are also available, and can be used in tapering if needed. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I've been taking Prozac 60mg for a few months now. With no improvement, my doc switched me to cymbalta (duloxetine) 60mg. Can i stop the Prozac cold and switch over?
Consult Doc: Prozac (fluoxetine) is a long acting medication and stays in your system for a long time and usually does not need tapering down of dose, however you seem to be on a higher dose, tapering to a smaller dose should before discontinuing. Your doc is the best person to decide that. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
My m.D just prescribed me cymbalta (duloxetine) after being on Prozac for years. My question is ...Is the cymbalta (duloxetine) a safe medicine, negative reviews scar me!?
They can be: Fluoxetine is an anti-anxiety, anti-depressant medication that may help mood and anxiety problems that can be common in fibromyalgia. Gabapentin is an anti-convulsant medication that can be used off-label to improve neuropathic pain, which is common in fibromyalgia. So in some patients, together these medications can improve different problems that occur in fibromyalgia. ...Read more
Am i at risk of serotonin syndrome i'm switching to to Prozac from cymbalta (duloxetine). One day Prozac one day cymbalta (duloxetine) for a week. Then Prozac all for a month?
Don't know the: Doses. It sounds like this is not a cross titration but rather doubling up the medications for a week? There are some people who develop serotonin syndrome even at low medication doses. However, for most people - the higher amounts of serotonin are the issue. Without knowing doses can't really comment. ...Read more
What's the best med for severe anxiety. I've tried prozac, paxil, celexa, cymbalta (duloxetine) and am now on lexapro not getting far & all were used with counseling.
Sometimes: Wellbutrin does not generally cause weight gain (and is often used specifically because it doesn't), although rarely it might cause weight gain. Prozac is somewhat more likely than wellbutrin to cause weight gain, but again generally does not. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is probably about as likely as Prozac to cause weight gain, but again generally does not cause significant weight gain. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

How does Prozac (fluoxetine) reduce pain? Helps with my back pain/my neuropathy in my foot. Doesn't seem to help all pain (fibromyalgia = not as much help)
Chemicals: Prozac (fluoxetine) is approved for chronic headaches but otherwise lacks indication for chronic pain such as neuropathy. It may help improving the pain by improving underlying depression, even if it was subtle or undiagnosed. Improvements in depression are linked to heightened pain tolerance. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Anti-depressant meds I have been on anti-depressants previously. In 2006-2008 i was on wellbrutin, then prozac, then cymbalta (duloxetine). I am depressed again - would the last med (cymbalta (duloxetine)) i took be the best choice at this time.
Whichever one: Worked the best for you is what i would recommend. Prozac (fluoxetine) is the only antidepressant with a study on trying it again after it stopped working. There was a 90% chance of it working the second time around. We have no comparable data on the others. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
