In: In general, for uncomplicated surgeries, it is recommended to wait 6-8 weeks prior to lifting anything heavier that a gallon of milk. This is because the tensile strength of a wound is relatively stable at this point. After this, a slow return to normal pre-surgery activity should ensue. Read more

Bump around the anus to the right side, happened shortly after appendicitis surgery. What could it be?

Bump around the anus to the right side, happened shortly after appendicitis surgery. What could it be?

External hemorrhoid: I suspect this is an external hemorrhoid. These vascular extensions of the local veins often develope in people who are constipated or chronically strain too hard while defecating. Chronic straining places high pressure on the rectal veins, causing these vascular 'balloons'. Narcotic pain medications can cause constipation, causing this problem. Less likely causes would be an infectious agent. Read more

Since 1981 after my appendicitis surgery, I used to experience sharp pains occasionally on the spinal cord. Please what should I do?

Check Spine Bones: Sometimes when people have surgery, there can be pressure on your spine bones when you are under anesthesia. This might put them into a position that is not normal for them, possibly pinching nerves or the cushioning discs between the vertebrae. Your doctor should be made aware of this, and may recommend x-rays of your spine. Often there may have been a problem before surgery. Good luck! Read more

Worrying too much?: Keep the sites clean, dry, ; covered. You're already on post-operative antibiotics. If red ; draining or open, get the wound (s) checked out now. Unless you're talking about intimate contact where the wounds will be contaminated in some way, casual interactions will not place your healing surgical incisions at risk. Get out there ; live life appendix-free. Read more
