Hard Vein Under Armpit
I'm a 23 year-old female with a painful hard vein in my armpit. Why could this be and what can I do about it? Could this have to do with breastfeeding even though the painful vein is a good distance from the breasts?
In: In a patient who is actively breast feading a palpable lump or cord can be indicative of a clogged duct. This condition is treatable by your physician or lactation consultant. However, if there is an identifiable "vein", your assessment may be correct. Regardless, you should report this to your primary doctor or your ob/gyn physician. Depending on their assessment, an ultrasound can be very helpful to futher evaluate whether it is a vascular issue or breast duct issue. ...Read more

Yes,: Yes, you should report this to your physician right away. If associated with arm swelling and or color changes of the skin you should seek care urgently. Your description is not specific enough to be more precise. A condition known as Paget schroeder can occur commonly in young muscular men which leads to venous narrowing and ultimately venous clot. This has been termed effort vein thrombosis and is seen in the dominant upper extremity related to muscular and ligamentous attachments at the first rib and clavicle junction. However clearly there is not enough information to make a diagnosis. If determined by your physician, an ultrasound may be the next step. ...Read more
I have a deep venous thrombosis near my subclavian vein. What risks do I run when I work my arm too hard?
Probably not much: The clot inside of your subclavian vein should be quite sticky unless it is very new. The chance of dislodging the clot with exercise is not zero, but is very small. The consequence of working your arm may be more swelling which will improve when you raise your arm above the level of your head. ...Read more

X-rays can identify bone structure, being useful in the detection of pathology of the skeletal system as well as for detecting some disease processes in soft tissue. 1wk after 10 blood draws w venflon in antecubital space after extreme tourniquet, veins right under armpit hurt a lot not constantly no redness. Why?

You may have had a small blood clot where the needle was placed that then traveled up to your armpit. It will dissolve on its own. Or the pressure on the vein from the repeated tourniquet may have stretched and inflamed it. Ouch. Very sorry about your ordeal. ...Read more
