15 y/o male. Hard lump on back of head, doesn't move, feels like bone, feels like dent under "lump" making it feel raised. Doc said lymph node?

Enlarged: Lymph nodes in that area are generally from SCALP sores which when scratched ca become infected! However, the SKULL often has raised areas which are NORMAL!! Sounds like you need a definite answer and this could involve xrays. If it is a lymph node and persists WITHOUT "simple" explanation a biopsy would be indicated!
Hope this helps!

? mastoid process: From your description and location, this sounds like the mastoid process, which would also be present on the other side. This is a projection of the skull where many of the jaw muscles are anchored. There are a variety of lymph nodes located all over the head and neck, but these tend not to be hard. Your doc could confirm or exclude this by exam. ...Read more

What can I do for an enlarged lymph node on back of head?

What can I do for an enlarged lymph node on back of head?

Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react. They shrink when all is well. ...Read more

My toddler has lymph nodes on back of head. They feel like they are stuck together. I feel an indent between them but they move together. Normal?

Likely normal: Those nodes on the back of the head, the occipital nodes, service most of the scalp. So if your toddler has any scalp irritation, be it a little cradle cap to bug bites on scalp to irritation from too tight of braiding of hair, these nodes can enlarge and wax and wane in size. As long as they are not getting bigger...Bigger...Bigger, and are not red/hot/very tender, they can be watched. ...Read more

Hi doctor Sokol. My child has a lymph node that seems swollen on the lower left back part of the head. Should I see a immunologist or a hematologist?

Normal finding: This is not a chat room and your questions are sent randomly to site visitors. Lymph nodes are normal findings in kids and enlarge/shrink over a 3-4 week cycle in response to a variety of triggers. Local skin irritation, bug bites. vaccinations, infections etc. That is what they do, and there is no need to run off to a specialist. If concerned call/see the kids primary doc. ...Read more

I've had a swollen lymph node behind my right ear for 13 months. It is hard. Randomly, it gets bigger and then goes back to size. Haven't been sick. Why?

Lump behind ear: Could mean a lot of things. Would first have your doctor check out your ears, nose and throat for possible ear or sinus/throat infection. It might not even be a node. Other considerations are cysts, sterile abscess or lipoma, benign or malignant tumors can also present like this. A doctor should be able to make that distinction by proper physical exam and order further testing as needed. ...Read more

Hard painful knot (in occipital lymph node area?) just randomly appeared last night. Woke up with the pain and found the knot. No injury

Watch the node: Carefully over the next 2-3 days. Sometimes infection will declare itself only after a few days. If it persists in size beyond a month or 6 weeks, I would have it looked at by a surgeon to make sure it doesn't mean lymphoma. Thanks for trusting in HealthTap. ...Read more

What would cause lymph nodes to swell on back of head. Under 1.5 CM but on both sides. Swell up and down.?

What would cause lymph nodes to swell on back of head. Under 1.5 CM but on both sides. Swell up and down.?

Lymph node swelling: Lymph nodes are part of your body's natural defense against both infections and foreign objects. Around the neck and head is the most common place for them to enlarge since they help to fight colds, ear infections, sinus infections, scalp infections, and dental. Enlarged lymph nodes in the back of your head usually come from scalp infections, ear infections (sometimes just from ear rings). ...Read more

Hard immovable painless occipital lymph node no bigger than 0.5 cm, noticed 5 weeks ago. Can this be cancerous?

Hard immovable painless occipital lymph node no bigger than 0.5 cm, noticed 5 weeks ago. Can this be cancerous?

Not really: 0.5 cm nodal lesion is about 1/4 inch. Most of the pathologic lymph nodes don't appear in the occipital region which drains the back of the scalp. They appear along the jugular chain usually not as a single small nodule. This could be lipoma, fibroma, neuroma. If it enlarges and is very firm, then a bx would be performed. Otherwise warm soaks to the area could resolve the problem. ...Read more

Is a 6x4x5 mm lymph node on back of neck at base of head that has been there over 20 years anything to worry sick over?

Is a 6x4x5 mm lymph node on back of neck at base of head that has been there over 20 years anything to worry sick over?

Not after 20 years: If you have had a lymph node for over 20 years and it has not changed you have nothing to worry about from that lymph node in its present situation. A lymph node goes up-and-down with infection but is sore when that occurs. A lymph node that changes and has no pain associated with it should be checked. Be sure it is a lymph node and not a cyst which is also benign. ...Read more

Lymph nodes: Lymphadenitis or swollen lymph nodes is due to viral or bacterial infection. The swollen lymph nodes caused by cancer is not very common condition. I don't think that your case is any different. Possible a dental infection due to tooth abscess, gum abscess or combination of both. Rec.: see another physician or dentist for the second opinion. Two occipital lymph node's that are swollen on either side. The left one seems to have gotten smaller I think. They are both hard. I was just in contact with my grandpa who's sick. Please help. Thanks!

Should be ok: Lymph nodes typically enlarge when they are fighting infection. The nodes in your neck may have gotten larger bc of some recent cold or sore throat. This shouldn't have any impact on you spending time with your sick grandpa. Unfortunately, if he has something contagious (cold or flu) you could still get it. If your lymph nodes get larger and stay that way (few weeks), you should see your doctor. ...Read more

Infectious: Swollen tender lymph nodes over a several day perior probably represents an infectious etiology. These particular lymph nodes can become swollen due to infections within the mouth. Mono and other viral ilness can cause a similar picture. Persistant swollen lymph nodes warrent evaluation and biopsy to exclude a lymphoma. ...Read more

1" hard movable mass, no pain in occipital lymph node in my 9yr old boy, he sadi its been there a few weeks and itches sometimes.. .. any concerns?

See Your Doctor Now: This mass may or may not be a prominent lymph node which is a component of the immune system. Infection, trauma, cancer can cause them to enlarge with or without pain. However itching is not a typical feature and benign nodes are usually soft. A non-lymphoid mass must also be considered. Visual inspection is required. See your doctor now for the correct diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more
