My Son is experiencing lump on top of his head under the scalp. It is skin color, pencil eraser in size, tender if touched harder than a pimple?
Not to worry: This lump is too small to worry unless it grows in size over the next several months. More than likely it is a benign knot due to either acne (pimple) or a lipoma which can get tender if you keep mashing it frequently. I would advise you to check it but not more than once monthly and note down the size. Unless it grows in size, there is nothing further to be done ...Read more

My son has a hard fixed lump on back of head more to left side parallel with top of his ear. No injury but does have dermatitis on right side of scalp. Seems too high to be a lymph node. But note sure. What could this be?
? mastoid process: From your description and location, this sounds like the mastoid process, which would also be present on the other side. This is a projection of the skull where many of the jaw muscles are anchored. There are a variety of lymph nodes located all over the head and neck, but these tend not to be hard. Your doc could confirm or exclude this by exam. ...Read more

They are problematic when they bother the person -or when they become infected. These can be removed by a doctor. Soft lumps may be lipomas: fatty growths.
