Many possibilities: How big? increasing in size? painful? history of infections? history of cancer? how deep? what does it feel like? swollen lymph nodes in the area? redness to the skin? does it move or is it fixed in position? drainage? fever? itching? fatigue? Infected cyst??: Sounds like you might have had a sebaceous cyst which got infected, hence it is harder and tender now. These are benign swellings in the skin occurring near a hair. See your doc/surgeon about it for proper DX and treatment. ...Read more

Get examined: Most "lumps" a person finds are benign should be evaluated by a doc at least for piece of mind. Special tests like an MRI or ultimately a biopsy may be in order. They should at least be sized and have a follow exam as well. ...Read more

Yes, possibly!: You should see a primary care physician soon for a thorough evaluation. Your "lump" can be something common that doesn't necessarily need treatment (lipoma, sebaceous cyst) or something treatable (boil, abscess) or something potentially serious (enlarged lymph node) or something definitely serious (cancerous tumor). Not to worry: We have lumps for all sorts of reasons. They are often small sebaceous cysts or nevi (moles). The fact that it hasn't changed in 3 years is a sign that it is stable and not cancerous. However, if it starts to grow or hurt, see a doctor. ...Read more

Lymph node: There are thousands of lymph node located around the body that help screen out germs in the body serum. There are many in the neck, head & behind the ear. At rest these are often 1/4 inch in diameter (pea sized) and may grow to marble sized when reacting to a stimulus. Neck anatomy: Other than lipoma, this could also be just normal anatomy -- at the base of the neck, the c7 and t1 spinous processes are much longer than the spinous processes above them, which results in a "bump" at the cervicothoracic junction which is actually normal.
