I have pulled my hamstring. The swelling and bruising have subsided but I have tenderness along the hamstring and the knee. Can i get this massaged or should I speak with a doctor first?

I don't think it: will hurt anything to massage the area of tenderness--as long as the massage does not increase or aggravate the discomfort. But I doubt that massage will help that much. Even if the swelling has improved, icing may still provide some pain relief as will ibuprofen/acetaminophen, avoiding reinjury. See your doctor/Sports Med/Orthopedist if pain persists or if instability/locking, etc. Stay well:) ...Read more

First you must ice i: the first 24 hours are critical. you must first ice it on and off every 20 minutes or so. take an ibuprofen or advil for pain. do not take tylenol (acetaminophen) or aspirin. you need an advil or ibuprofen. you need to rest it and talk it over with your coach to better assess your plan for a comeback. Injuries happen to athletes all the time. so you w ill e alright ...Read more

I have a partial torn hamstring(right leg). A bruise appears at the gluteous fold and area behind the kneecap. What? Concern?

I have a partial torn hamstring(right leg). A bruise appears at the gluteous fold and area behind the kneecap. What? Concern?

Broken blood vessel: Bruising in both areas may be from the same source of bleeding. Will likely resolve, but compartment syndrome is a concern, ie, swelling to the point that nerves are squeezed. Emergent surgery would be required to relieve swelling. Seek care for pale skin below, numbness, or increasing deep/burning pain. Avoid aspirin or nsaids for a couple of days. ...Read more

I injured my hamstring about 5 days ago and i'm just starting to get some bruising around the bend of my knee. What should I do?

Hamstring: The "hamstrings" are the muscles that flex the knee, and can be injured easily. The bruising that you have came from bleeding that resulted from a tear in the muscle and will settle to the lowest point. Gentle range of motion exercises, flexing and extending the knee and if there is a lot of stiffness massage and warming the area. Physical therapy and a home program are good choices and time. ...Read more

Grade 2 hamstring tear 2 days ago, heard pop, no bruise. Mobility low, but improving. Steep ski slope 3-mile mud run coming in 7 weeks. Advisable?

Grade 2 hamstring tear 2 days ago, heard pop, no bruise. Mobility low, but improving. Steep ski slope 3-mile mud run coming in 7 weeks. Advisable?

Cutting it close: A true grade 2 tear of a hamstring involves actual separation of muscle tissue and bleeding and subsequent inflammatory response locally. This can often be a 6 to 8 week injury to heal. This precludes the training required for the event and coming back too soon can lead to recurrent and actually a worse injury. A good course of physical therapy with a pt that understands the injury is beneficial. ...Read more

Pain in hamstrings I have a bruise on the inside of thigh could this be a sign of blood clots Iam on andro gel?

Pain in hamstrings I have a bruise on the inside of thigh could this be a sign of blood clots Iam on andro gel?

Not likely.: A bruise is not a sign of a blood clot. It is a sign of bleeding from some type of injury usually. Are you on aspirin or other blood thinners? If yes, then you are at increased risk of bleeding from any injury. If you are concerned about a blood clot, you should see your Dr. who could do an ultrasound on the leg to check for it. ...Read more

Pain in hamstring with movements, no swelling no bruising, pain started 30 hours after workout but doesn't feel like DOMS. Blood clot?

Pain in hamstring with movements, no swelling no bruising, pain started 30 hours after workout but doesn't feel like DOMS. Blood clot?

Exercise related: You worked out. Then you noted pain in hamstrings. This most likely represents sore muscles from the workout. If you are otherwise healthy and 18 years old? I would stretch the area of soreness. You note no pain at rest no swelling... Thus unlikely a blood clot. If you are short of breath, recently on birth control then see doctor immediately as that would be concern for clot. ...Read more

Random dark bruising over R hamstrings. Did not hit my leg, or sit on something. Broken L foot. Overcompensating with weight and burst a blood vessel?

Be seen: There are multiple possibilities, including an injury to the hamstrings by compensating for the contra lateral broken foot as you suggested. But if you have been more sedentary from the fracture, it is possible it could be related to a blood clot and so I would let your doctor know and be checked for it. ...Read more
