Rule out infection: Melanoma and atypical moles are not typically painful. None the less any changing mole should be checked by your doctor. Sometimes a mole can have an cyst under that gets infected. Trauma with a secondary infection can cause pain. Try a bandage and topical otc antibiotic (polysporin) . Go ahead: It's your call, but if your dermatologist thinks it's nasty enough to come off, i'll defer to him/her. It can be hard to tell a very inflamed halo nevus from a malignant melanoma -- it could perhaps be a wolf in sheep's clothing.
