Does everyone with halitosis have gum disease?

Does everyone with halitosis have gum disease?

Not everyone: Gum disease is not the only cause of halitosis (bad breath). Fishy foods, onions, garlic, scallions, fermented foods, coffee, etc..., can cause halitosis. Fatty foods may worsen stomach reflux, and send odors up to the mouth. Sinusitis infections can cause odors due to the mucus/phlegm in the nose & throat. Excess fiber or other "undigestibles" can lead to gas and odors coming out the other end. ...Read more

My reputable dental insurance provided a list of many local professionals who identify as periodontists but are not American Academy of Periodontology members. Should I pay more (out of pocket) for AAP members? Or can I trust my insurance company?

My reputable dental insurance provided a list of many local professionals who identify as periodontists but are not American Academy of Periodontology members. Should I pay more (out of pocket) for AAP members? Or can I trust my insurance company?

Trust?: Insurance companies have little or no interest in finding you the best dental specialists. They check on basic credentials generally. I would combine both your own independent search of highly competent and respected specialists in your area and hopefully at least one will accept your insurance. ...Read more

Meds for nonspecific esophageal dysmotility? Food sticks so heartburn & sore throat. Behavioral measures better (soft food, lots of water)?

Meds for nonspecific esophageal dysmotility? Food sticks so heartburn & sore throat. Behavioral measures better (soft food, lots of water)?

Diet and maybe meds: A difficult problem. Be sure it is not related to nerve issues such as in diabetic gastroparesis. Trying to eat small meals throughout the day (grazing) can help. Be sure to avoid irritants such as caffeine and tobacco as both make heartburn worse by relaxing the muscles at the opening of the stomach. Some meds like Erythromycin and metochopramide may be needed to stimulate movement.Fluids good. ...Read more

I was thinking of buying dental tartar scraper by osung, sold by brite sources usa for inbetween cleanings. do i need to sterlize these tools? how?

Please don't: I promise you,you can do more harm than good. You can permanently damage your teeth and/or gums. Best solution is to brush AND floss exactly as prescribed by your Dentist/Hygienist. If hard tarter still collects on your teeth, schedule more frequent professional cleanings. More frequent cleanings are a lot less expensive, and much more effective, than having to repair the damage DIY Rx causes. ...Read more

How does one recuperate 8 years after being diagnosed with giardia & allergies to wheat, diary, soy, eggs, beef, garlic, citrus & nuts. Malabsorption is a problem. Many md's & nd's have been consulted with no results. Help!?

Malabsorption: Complex case-you have clearly had many good minds approach these issues with you. I'm so sorry, but this forum is not designed to tackle problems as complex as you are describing. What to even tell you to seek? Perhaps a good allergist who really works closely with a GI doc and has a nutritionist on staff...You will need to focus on foods that you are able to eat and try to work from there. ...Read more
