How is a fracture different from a hairline fracture in the ankle?

How is a fracture different from a hairline fracture in the ankle?

No difference: A "hairline fracture" is a layman's term for a non-displaced fracture (a break in the bone, but the bone has not move out of position at all). All hairline fractures are fractures, but not all fractures are hairline fractures, as fractures are often times displaced due to the force of the injury and/or due to the muscle pull of the surrounding muscles. What are some signs of a hairline fracture in your ankle?

What are some signs of a hairline fracture in your ankle?

Pain & Swelling: The symptoms of a hairline/occult fracture include persistent pain, swelling and difficulty walking and standing on the ankle. These can also be small enough that they are not revealed on normal x-rays. If these persist longer than your doctor indicated for a sprain, additional testing such as an MRI or bone scan might need to be considered. Good luck. Read more

Hello I took my full leg cast of 5 days ago (due to a hairline fracture in my tibia) I have been walking with a limp and saw my ankle got swollen?

PT may be in order: Physical therapy can address the gait issue with limping as this is likely related to muscle weakness. In addtion they can do soft tissue massage to alleviate the ankle swelling. This can occur when muscles are weak and do not provide enough pumping action to return blood to the heart.Check in w/your Orthopedist or Sports MD to get a prescription &/or agreement on next steps to get your gait normal Read more
