Hair Loss (Definition)

Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, can be caused by different reasons, including damage to the hair shaft or follicles or fungal infections. There are two main types of alopecia. Alopecia areata occurs when the body's immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair to fall out. Androgenetic (or androgenic) alopecia, on the other hand, is an inherited form of hair loss. With alopecia areata, hair can fall out in patches all over the body. With androgenetic alopecia, hair on the head first thins and then falls out. I'm hypothyroid. When on birth control alone, I noticed dat my acne &hair loss improved little. Is dis pos? Iv heard dat bcps worsen thyroid problems?

BCP and thyroid: BCP do not worsen thyroid problems. Presumably you are taking levothyroxine for your hypothyroidism. BCP increases the amount of thyroid binding protein in the blood. I took the injection...3 month contraception. Instead of birth control pill. Could losing hair be a side effect?

Yes: Yes, but it is not a permanent loss. Each hair goes through a growth phase, a "resting" phase, and then falls out to start the cycle over again. Conditions like pregnancy and use of hormones synchronize much of your hair so that although they will all fall out at the same time they will then start growing back. ...Read more
