Had major surgery & want to minimize hair loss if it happens. Dr. said take 10 mcg biotin. Is this right dose & does biotin really help with hair loss?

Doubt it: Biotin deficiency is rare, but can occur in persons with genetic mutations, on long-term antibiotics or anti-convulsants, or who eat a lot of raw egg whites. There is no good evidence that this easily available, over-the-counter supplement is the magic potion to grow hair or prevent hair loss. Biotin is safe to take at normal recommended doses (the Mayo Clinic website recommends 30-100 mcg a day). ...Read more

Had sinus surgery for infect. 4 months ago, infect. back on left side. I don't know if it's possible or not, but could it cause hair loss?

Time doesn't stop for anyone. ...Read more

Can paragard IUD cause hair loss? I have not had a baby, surgery, not a thyroid or a anaemia problem. My only change has been an iud. Its not genetic.

IUDs: I have seen online complaints of hair loss with iuds, but usually with hormonal iuds like mirena (levonorgestrel). Its not a listed side effect with paragard. You might want to see a dermatologist and ask if there are other causes of your loss or if it could be an odd copper allergy side effect. ...Read more

Will all the medications from surgeries and the antibiotic (doxycycline hyciate) cause hair loss?

Depends: Hair loss can be a side effect of some medications. Without knowing what your medications are, it is hard to answer your question. Doxycycline in general does not list hair loss as its common side effects. On the other hand, the stress of surgery itself can affect your hormone status such that your hair growth and hair loss suffer an imbalance with end result of hair loss. ...Read more
