Growth Development Of A 4 Month Old Baby
4-6 words: At 15 months of age we expect a child to have 4-6 words. They generally can follow simple commands, such as 'go get your shoes,' and can point to 2-3 body parts (eyes, nose, ears, belly button, etc.) Of course all children develop at their own pace. But a 16 month old who is not close to meeting these milestones should be evaluated by their doctor. ...Read more
Absolutely!: Not every baby even uses a pacifier. Use of a pacifier is to give baby that extra comforting sucking time they want/need. Some babies get all the time they need just from feedings and/or nursing. Other babies utilize a pacifier for that comfort measure As baby matures, the need for extra sucking goes away. For some babies that is at just months of age, for other kids it can be toddler years! ...Read more

Simple: I have answered this many times on healthtap. If the food had not been here when we arrived on earth, we could not have survived. My single answer is always "god made food" and leave the man made stuff alone. The trouble is that it is expensive but it satisfies without causing obesity. Sugar is the most dangerous. See my blog "oxygen the spark of life". ...Read more
I recommend 2.5-5 ml: but this depends a little on the size of your baby. Preschool children easily tolerate 1 cap full, which is 17 grams (about a tablespoon or 15ml). If dose is not effective in 8-12 hours, a repeat dose may be given until stool is soft. Too large a dose will cause diarrhea and can potentially cause dehydration, so be sure to offer fluids. ...Read more
Why should you not give steroid eye drops to babies? Can a drop like tobradex cause long term damage to a 4 month old infant?
See article: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/pmc249630. Steroid drops in appropriate cases may be helpful. When used without verifying the infectious agent, it has risk. It suppresses the natural tissue response to infection. If the agent is a virus called herpes simplex it can allow permanent scarring of the cornea. Fungal & bacterial agents could flourish & simple virus shedding could be prolonged 3 wks. ...Read more

Can I use tobradex drops for conjunctivitis in a 4 month old baby? Eye doctor said it’s ok but everything I read says not to.
I don't: Did the doc evaluate the kid & prescribe it for this episode ? I never use this in an infant, ever. The steroid component can allow certain germs to cause problems, so I limit my drops to antibiotic only . Ophthalmologists who have more experience/sophisticated equipment to evaluate the infection can determine if a steroid drop is proper. ...Read more

My 4 month old baby gets histerical once I put his infant carrier in the car. He won't stop crying turning blue and shaking. What should I do ?
Keep him safe in car: At four months he is too young for a real temper tantrum. While he may get agitated by the car seat's restrictive environment, his safety in the car is paramount for him to be transported in any other way in the car. You may want to have someone else sit beside him not to make him so lonely. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
4 month old infant with eczema on back of neck and bleeding due to scratching. How would you treat this?
Ate cookie with molasses. Scared I dropped cookie crumbs and my 4 month old possibly got them on hand/ into her mouth. Could she get infant botulism?
Possible: It is possible to get botulism but it is unlikely. Watch out for symptoms 18 - 36hrs after ingestion. Symptoms in infants are lethargy, weakness, poor feeding, weak cry. Constipation is usually the first symptom to occur. There is nothing for you to do now except observation. If your baby seems to be floppy or develops any of the above symptoms, you need to go to the nearest ER. ...Read more
How often can I give my 6 month old infant glycerol? She's over 8kgs and hasn't had a proper bm in a few days I gave her glycerol yesterday
Constipation?: I'm assuming that you mean glycerin suppositories for constipation. Every once in a while these are ok to give. If you are giving one every few days you should try and figure out how to relieve the constipation. Likely you have started some solids by now. Consider giving a small amount of undiluted fruit juice 2-4 oz or a smushed up fresh fruit. Just stay away from bananas. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Anything is possible: Femur fractures in infants are unusual. However, it is certainly possible for this to happen without abuse. Possible that switching formulas one to many times can effect brain development or harm brain development in an infant?
No, but...: Switching formulas that are meant for regular babies is ok to do and does not lead to problems... but of course, anything is possible in life. No worries. One can just choose major brands of formula, and that should work fine. Breast milk works better, if a woman can breastfeed. ...Read more
Is it possible for a 3-4 months old infant to develop gout? Diagnosis was based on presence of urine crystals in diaper. No family history of gout.
Depends on the baby: Your breast milk supply is usually well established by 2-4 weeks. If the baby is having a growth spurt, which can happen any time, she might want to nurse every hour or two for a few days until your supply builds up; she will then go back to less frequent nursings. You can help by drinking more water and letting her nurse as she wishes. She will nurse more if it is hot, also. ...Read more
Should i be giving my 4 mo old infant multivitamin drops or is formula and purees meeting her vitamin requirements?
Infant vitamins. : Only small amounts of vitamin d are transferred in breast milk. That's why the american academy of pediatrics (aap) now recommends that you give your breastfed baby a supplement of 400 iu per day of vitamin d, starting in the first few days of life. Babies who are fully or partially formula fed but drink less than 32 ounces of formula a day also need a daily 400 iu vitamin d supplement ...Read more
