Growth Chart (Overview)

A growth chart is used by pediatricians to follow a child's growth over time. Growth charts have been constructed by observing the growth of large numbers of normal children over time. The height, weight, and head circumference of a child can be compared to the expected parameters of children of the same age and sex to determine whether the child is growing appropriately.

Should I worry that my baby is not always at the same percentile on the growth chart?

No: Babies often switch curves on a growth chart, depending on their activity levels, the time of day the measurement is taken, and the genetic potential for growth they are given by her parents. As long as your baby continues to grow, the growth curves are just guides. ...Read more

How do growth chart percentiles work?

Identify PATTERNS: Growth charts allow us to determine whether the trend or pattern of a child's growth is healthy. This is crucial, because individual measurements may be +/-, due to squirming babies or slightly different measuring techniques. While it's tempting to focus on individual measurements, this often creates undo anxiety. The big picture--over time--is usually what matters most. ...Read more

How do I read a growth chart?

Follow trends: Growth charts are based on normal ranges and patterns of growth. Generally, kids follow a line in the height, weight, or head circumference charts, but there's a lot of variability and sometimes "crossing" of growth lines. One number by itself means far less than trends. Anything too high or low - above or below the group of lines - may or may not indicate a problem, but deserves a look. ...Read more

Is a growth chart always correct?

Is a growth chart always correct?

Correct Measurement?: Exellent question! The problem isn't the growth chart, it is the quality of the measurement plotted onto the growth chart. When a point on a growth chart doesn't seem right, the measurement should be taken again. It is so easy to make measurement mistakes in length and height depending on how the measurement is taken and whether the child is moving around. Remember to take the shoes off! ...Read more

I am 5'9". My husband is 5'10". Approximately how tall should our 16mo old boy be? At 26.5 inches he has fallen off the growth chart. Is this odd?

Odd measurements: If your 16 mo boy measures 26.5 inches I would have done a workup on him for failing to grow months ago. He should measure 32 inches or so with his parental genes. If he has been diagnosed with a major medical problem, syndrome or other issue, this might be expected, but not in an otherwise normal kid. ...Read more

How are growth charts developed?

Lots of measuring: The children's hospital in denver became famous for collecting growth curves for many of the children followed in their clinics. Are growth charts accurate, at 16 I'm 177 cm and according to two different refrences it says I should be 182 by 18. These charts a good reference?

Depends: The growth chart assumes that you enter puberty at the average time and follow the expected growth rate. Linear growth (taller) requires that your growth centers be open to new growth, but some mature faster or slower than others meaning they will stop sooner or later than others. Many males finish growing at 16 some at 20.An x-ray of your wrist/hand could tell if you will grow taller. ...Read more

Is thriving in growth charts, but refuses regular food. Relys on milk. When he does eat his bowel movements are runny have chunks of whole food in it.

Diet & Milk: Hello. This age can have picky eating habits. Milk despite many calories is iron deficient and can cause anemia in kids relying on milk. Is best to limit milk to 16oz or less per day. Less milk can boost appetite. If juice intake is high, runny stools can result. Lactose may be cause also. Recommend stool tests if long term issue. For consults, my link is

Doctor wants to scrape off growth on vagina. Chart says its a partial vaginectomy. He just said that's what the procedure was called. Should I worry?

Doubt it, ask again?: A funny thing happens in medical practices and that's that insurance companies only recognize certain general classes or disorders and procedures. Often a doctor may have to "round off" to the closest procedure that has an insurance code. This is common, ethical, and legal (I do it daily.) If still worried ask the doctor again. ...Read more

No (urban myth): There is no data to support coffee stunting your growth (this myth grew out of a concern that caffeine may be a risk factor for poor bone health, it is not if there is enough calcium in your diet).
