Group B Strep Throat Infection
Does taking treatment for throat infection put my baby more at risk for my Group B Strep? I'm a carrier. Abx don't cover GBS can they make it stronger
So the usual recommendation is that you get tested for Group B strep between 35-37 weeks of your pregnancy. If you test positive, they will give you IV antibiotics that cover GBS during labor because the GBS transmission to the baby occurs during childbirth. Generally speaking, if an antibiotic doesn't cover GBS, it won't stimulate it to become "stronger". ...Read more
Infections are invasions of some other organism (fungus, bacteria, parasite) or viruses into places where they do not belong. For instance, we have normal gut bacteria that live within us without causing problems; however, when those penetrate the bowel wall and enter the bloodstream, ...Read more
Can levofloxin be used to treat a strep throat infection? Are there better choices? I am allergic to penicillin and tetracylinces.
Antibiotics: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician & get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day. ...Read more
I've recently had a nasty strep throat infection. I've been taking phenoxymethylpenicillian and now I have a stomache ache that would kill a dog.?
Had a throat infection. 4 months later still hav large tonsils no pain. Swabbed it myself as dr dismissed me! Found group a strep. Is Treatment needed?
Antibiotics are given to prevent Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD), NOT to cure the sore throat. At best they may reduce the duration of symptoms by 16 hours. The incidence of Rheumatic Fever (RF) in the U.S. is one in a million cases of strep throat. Only one out of three patients with RF develop RHD. For every three million antibiotic Rx's only one case of RHD is prevented. **See

I want to know if Levaquin treats strep throat or bacterial pharyngitis since I'm allergic to penicillin and resistant to biaxin (clarithromycin)? .
Not a good choice: Levaquin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and usually preferred for more serious infections. Strep throat is usually still amenable to most first generation antibiotics. Being allergic to penicillin suggests u shd try a cephalosporin which shd help. Resistant to Biaxin (clarithromycin) is unlikely and erythromycins may still work. Relatively safer medications like clindamycin also exist. ...Read more
I saw a doctor yesterday and was diagnosed with pharyngitis. Still waiting for strep throat culture to come back. Pain is worst. Can hardly swallow.?
Can be other things.: Strep is not the only cause of pharyngitis. Herpes simplex, chlamydia, ebv, corynebacterium diptheriae, and many others can also cause it. That is one reason why the strep check swab is done, as well as a strep culture. Your doctor should be able to do this/should have done this rapid check so you can start treatment if positive. See your doctor soon if it gets worse for empiric treatment. ...Read more
If progressive...: Exposure of the vocal cords to stomach acid ; pepsin will result in inflammation of the vocal cords (as is also often seen with acid regurgitation). Or if not, then you may need some at this point if there is bacterial suprainfection. You need to see your doctor again for re-examination and proper diagnosis.
