Take as prescribed: This sounds like a potentially serious infection, maybe even pneumonia. "Afraid to take" azithromycin (Zpak) is not rational; it is a very safe antibiotic with few side effects. Not treating your infection is MUCH riskier than any potential problem from the antibiotic. Take it as prescribed; if you remain concerned, discuss with the doctor who prescribed it. ...Read more

See a doctor: With these sorts of symptoms, you need answers. I would worry that your platelet count might have dropped as a result of the viral infection - allowing the blood to become thinner, such that you'd have nose bleeding and blood in the sputum. Hopefully you're plugged into an Ob/Gyn practice - I would call them and try to get seen today. If it's after hours and you're not doing well- go to the ER. ...Read more

Hard to know: You may have ruptured a small blood vessel coughing or because of the inflammation due to the infection. You may also have developed a secondary bacterial infection, or the initial diagnosis may have been incorrect. Mgt and workup: After the flu infection, there can be prolonged inflammation and casts in the airway. Your nose also may be inflamed. I would suggest keeping airway and nasal passages moist with saline and humidification. If you have any fever, pain, chills or night sweats, please see the ED or urgent care. ...Read more

See a doctor: It sounds like you have seen doctors. How you can be sure you do not have an allergy is beyond me. Suggest that you try nasal saline rinses twice a day with a neti-pot (see your pharmacist), and perhaps combine that with a nasal steroid spray. If you are a smoker or around second hand smoke, stop. The material you bring up needs to be examined, and you need a face to face with a caring doctor. ...Read more
