A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more
Usually splinting: Most toe fractures, if in good alignment, will respond well to splinting. Taping the fractured toe to the adjacent toe (s) for several weeks (3-6) along with a good, stiff shoe or surgical shoe is usually adequate. If concerns, have it evaluated. Not all fracture respond with simple treatment. If misalignment or continued pain, have an examination. Dr l. ...Read more
Maybe buddy taping: Often, simple toe-fracture does not require casting/high-tech treatment. Supportive care with pain control (motrin/tylenol or something stronger) and simple buddy-taping (wrapping fractured-toe to the one next to it to give support) will do the job. If severe pain, deformed toe (bad fx), u may need additional rx. Consult doc for an eval. Good luck. ...Read more

Get evaluated: Most toe fractures without out apparent deformity other than swelling heal with minimal treatment other than stiff soled opened toe shoe +- buddy taping. The great toe needs at least an xray and advice of a podiatrist or orthopedic surgeon as to whether or not surgery is necessary to prevent deformity and or arthritis. ...Read more
Thick soles are best: The stiffer the sole of the shoe, the less the toe bends. The less it bends, the faster it heals. ...Read more
Big toe fracture with toenail torn off. How long should swelling and pain persist? Xray was normal 6 months later but still swollen and painful.
My question is: When the nail became torn off, was the nail bed cut open exposing the toe bones. If so, this is called an open fracture, with a chance of bone infection. If you were my patient, I would get a CBC, ESR, and MRI, checking for osteomyelitis. The MRI can also detect a non-healing fracture. Good luck.

I had a toe fracture when I was 11. I'm 27 now and when I walk I am getting pain on my fractured area. Could they be related?
Possibly: Depending on the toe the fracture could have healed in a slightly deformed position causing early arthritis in the joint in the toe. Going to see a doctor to get an x-ray of the foot could possibly show this. If this is truly painful a fusion of the joint may be required to remove this pain. ...Read more

Recently, I had a toe fracture and the swelling last for 6weeks and it still swelling. Normally how long does toe fracture and the swelling heal?
Toe fracture: Bone fractures might take 4-6 weeks to heal. However, if treatment is not adequate, healing can be delayed or it might heal incorrectly causing chronic pain and swelling. For toe fracture, if you don't splint/buddy-tape the injured toe or you continue with physical activities using that toe, fracture might not heal and you continue to have pain and swelling. ...Read more

I had a displaced fifth toe fracture 3 days ago reduced with buddy taping. I cant hang my foot down, results in severe pain. How should I walk?
Not my buddy: Since you mention displaced fracture and buddy taping, it sounds like it has already been examined, x-rayed and splinted by a pro. If not, do it. When a bone breaks blood to the bone increases, increasing the pressure. When you hang it down, the pressure increases more. That increases pain. Elevate it. The taping may be slowing the blood out of toe increasing pain. Adjust it. Use fx shoe, crutch. ...Read more
What to do after a pinky toe fracture two+ years ago? My moms foot gets swollen and can hardly walk on it. She in pain. Pain relievers not working.
I had fifth toe fracture last week. Yesterday I noted a large bruise in the centre of foot extremely painful and is not letting me hang my foot/walk?
You hit your toe against something hard enough to break it. My guess is, you hit the rest of the foot hard also, but didn't notice it because the toe hurt so much. Now it's badly bruised.

Is it broken or fractured is a question I am often asked. The answer is basically that a broken or fractured bone is the same thing.
