Every time I pay a doctors bill before insurance does, it seems nearly impossible to get refunded. What is best?
Wait for insurance: Don't pay before insurance completes their transaction. By contract, the physician or hospital must accept the insurance maximum for that service. This means the overall charge may be reduced. Wait for the insurance to pay the doctor first or call the insurance company to verify your obligation. After insurance pays, you will get a revised bill. If you are due a refund, demand it - it's the law. ...Read more

Why won't doctors let me pay the insurance price at the time of service? I struggle to provide medical insurance for my family. I often considered buying a major medical policy and seeing if i negotiate routine care at a fair price, but nobody seems inter
Individual : Individual patients are often able to negotiate something up front if they don't have insurance, but the doctor can't simply lower his or her rate for all uninsured patients because doing so would establish a new "baseline." that's a problem because it is illegal to charge anyone less than you charge medicare for the same procedure. In your example, the doctor bills $234.00, knowing that he or she will only get $64.00--a 62% cut. If he charged you $64.00 for the same service, then by law he could not charge medicare patients any more than that, which means that the same 62% cut would earn him only $17.50. It's a crazy system. To be honest, i think the vast majority of doctors would prefer to stop taking insurance altogether and just charge patients directly. That would eliminate a ton of paperwork and delay, as you've suggested. The problem is that medical costs don't come in small, manageable chunks: for most people, there are no costs at all for years, punctuated by periodic big charges for illness or accidents. That's why insurance is a necessary evil. ...Read more

Court &credit report: If you entered into a treatment agreement with your dentist, including a financial commitment & failed to meet your obligations, your dentist is within their rights to take you to court (if you lose you'd pay all law bills) and the dentist can also send a negative report to the credit agencies. Just saying you didn't like the result without allowing for correction is not a solid legal defense. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Can i go to the e.R. To have ectopic preg. Surgery? I'm afraid they'll reject me because I do not have ins. But I do have a fixed income, to pay bill
No: The er is for emergencies, hence emergency room. Having planned surgery is not an emergency. The only reason to go to the er for ectopic pregnancy surgery is because of a complication from not getting treatment beforehand. In that case, your health or even life may be in jeopardy. You should talk to a social worker asap to get insured or on medicaid. Don't block people with real emergencies. ...Read more
