What is the best car seat for my baby to graduate to?

What is the best car seat for my baby to graduate to?

Stay rear facing: The aap recently recommended that babies remain rear facing until at least 2 yrs, or later if under the maximum weight for that seat. Car seats with "side impact protection" are being marketed but there is not yet standard testing for this feature. If possible, the middle of the back seat is safest. Booster seats are for after 4 yrs or 40# (whichever later), but many car seats accommodate 100#. ...Read more

If you need help go to www.safekids.org and locate a local fitting station. ...Read more

Can my baby get HIV by touching semen in a car seat? What if it was dry?

Relax, Don: We know from the old days when HIV wasn't treatable that family members don't infect each other without intimate contact. And dried semen won't infect anyone, nor has anybody gotten sick from "safe sex" in which semen can end up on the skin. Let's practice good housekeeping and car-keeping, especially now that you're a grown man and a Dad -- but don't worry about HIV from this. ...Read more

My 4-month-old has a hard time sleeping anywhere except in his car seat. Is that very strange?

My 4-month-old has a hard time sleeping anywhere except in his car seat. Is that very strange?

Time to fix this!: He's just gotten used to sleeping there;it's time to retrain him to sleep in his crib. Put baby in bed sleepy but awake, & leave room. If he still cries after 5 minutes, return but only to tuck him in again without speaking or picking him up. Leave again and start gradually prolonging each interval before each return. It can take a few days, but your baby will learn! ...Read more

Will a baby being in a car seat for too long hurt their liver or kill them? My baby is 9 days old.

Will a baby being in a car seat for too long hurt their liver or kill them? My baby is 9 days old.

Get correct car seat: Wedge shaped seats could have an impact on baby's breathing if they're left in their seat for long periods of time. Lie-flat car seats claim to be a safer and better mode of transporting babies than traditional wedge-shaped car seats. If you are a family who make regular long journeys and spend more than 2 hrs at a time in the car, a lie-flat option will be better for your baby. ...Read more
