Yes: Metacarpal fractures can cause a lot of swelling depending on how they were broken. Proper splinting of the hand in the "safe or functional position" is important to minimize later stiffness. Once fractures have healed enough (usually around 3 weeks) hand therapy can be started to decrease swelling and improve range of motion and stiffness. Make sure you elevate your hand, rest it on pillows above the level of your heart.
