Fracture (Definition)

A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more

I fractured my ankle 8 days ago. Due to fly in 5 days to USA from UK for honeymoon. In a lightweight cast. Is it safe to fly and should cast be Split?

Ankle fracture: It is safer to fly in the cast as it is more protective than if it is bivalved like a splint. Both flying and recent ortho injuries are risks for blood clot development however so you should ask your physician if prophylaxis for this is warranted. ...Read more

I broke my back in 3 places in a car accident, most severe was a compression fracture. This was 6 months ago, how long will i be in such severe pain?

Hard to say: Most simple compression fractures heal by 8-12 weeks. Your persistent, severe pain suggests there may be something going on beyond just sustaining simple compression fractures. I encourage you to seek repeat evaluation. Thank you for your question. ...Read more

How do doctors normally treat a bone bruise in a child? Plus, can you get a bone bruise without falling and how? My daugther runs in cross-country .

Bruise = patience: A bone bruise is like a scuff mark in a tree's bark. Bone has sensory endings in the layer around the bones surface like the bark of a tree.If you hit it, the blow can trigger the pain receptors & sometimes a reaction at the bones surface. A bump may form with some calcium buildup. A direct or glancing blow can trigger the event. Over time it will heal on its own. ...Read more

I have a "severe bone bruise" of the metacarpals and was placed in a cast they dr said they would call back for follow-up how long will wear this cast?

If the bone: is not broken, generally the will leave the splint or cast on for 1-2 weeks. If there is a fracture, usually the cast stays on for 4-6 weeks. At your next doctor visit, they will probably take another Xray to make sure there was not a small fracture that didn't show up on the first Xray. Hope this helps! ...Read more

I broke my big toe and was referred to an orthopedic surgeon at children's hospital. The toe is broken expect since i can barely walk to get crutches, what to do?

Get Evaluated: This injury could be into the joint. If so, it may need to have surgery to prevent long-term problems. My suspicion is that the on call doctor was a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, which is why you're following up at the children's hospital. I would not worry about where you were following up, this individual is fully capable of diagnosing and most likely treating any adult big toe injury. If not i'm sure he/she will refer to the appropriate provider. ...Read more

My son was diagnosed with hirschsprungs at 4 weeks old. Do i go to minneapolis university hospital, or should I go straight to cincinnati where they specialize in the disease? Short segment suspected

Ask about ...: ... Case volumes. If your are sure the diagnosis is correct (and as it was a university program I am assuming they see many referrals and thus am assuming diagnosis is correct) then the treatment is going to be surgical. The key question then is how many hirschprung surgeries the specific surgeon (not the program) has done. In this case more is better. ...Read more

None of my dental specialists in south Florida will see a patient that has piercing pain as an emergency to include Friday thru Sunday. What do I do?

GP or Hospital GPR: Try a General Practioner who sees emergencies on an 24 hour basis or try a hospital that has a dental residency program where the dentists getting advanced training will treat you. You may have to travel a little, but the pain relief will be worth the trip. You may also want to call the Florida Dental Association for guidance. Good luck! ...Read more

Your : Your question is a good one but absolutely impossible to answer in any meaningful way without knowing many more details of the injury, having a good exam, and seeing the x-ray at the very least. Assuming that this is a so-called articular fracture, that is in to the joint, one would have to know what the joint surfaces look like, how displaced the bone fragments are etc... While at 2 and 1/2 months you are already beyond the normal healing period for this type of fracture, you should still not delay in seeking a medical evaluation. At the very least you will be started on appropriate therapy. Even without insurance, see if there is not a local hospital clinic that can help out. Best of luck. ...Read more

Many possibilities: Some causes of swelling of the ankles can include systemic problems such as hypertension, and problems with the kidneys and localized issues such as arthritis, infection, lymphatic obstruction, blood clots, varicose veins, trauma (fracture, sprain, tendonitis) and side effects to medication. Have it evaluated by a professional and get the appropriate treatment. ...Read more

Possibly: Peripheral nerves (outside of the brain and spinal cord) can grow back, but often may have pain during the process. Whether or not the nerve grows back depends on many factors, for which you should see your primary care provider, and possibly a neurologist. ...Read more

A fracture means a break in the cortex or the strong layer of outer bone cells. In an adult the average time for that to heal varies greatly but is often considered to ...Read more
