Gonorrhea (Definition)

Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhea. Anyone who has any type of sex can catch gonorrhea. The infection can be spread by contact with the mouth, vagina, penis, or anus. The bacteria grow in warm, moist areas of the body, including the tube that carries urine out of the body (urethra). In women, the bacteria may be found in the reproductive tract (which includes the fallopian tubes, uterus, and cervix). The bacteria can even ...Read more

Hi, I've taken amoxicillin for a week, 2 times a day. My gonorrhea didn't get any better. What should I do?

Change medication: CDC guidelines say that cephalosporins are recommended to treat gonorrhea. You need injectable cephalosporin/ceftriaxone + second antibiotic/tetracycline to treat common STDs. I hope this will help. ...Read more

If I have gonorrhea can I just take amoxicillin with no probenecid?

If I have gonorrhea can I just take amoxicillin with no probenecid?

Where are you??: Amoxicillin-resistant gonococci are very common in many areas, and not recommended as first line therapy. When sensitive, probenecid delays excretion of Amoxicillin by the kidneys and increases the levels available in the body. The combo is beneficial when the organisms are sensitive. Check the cdc website for current recommendations for your area. ...Read more

Amoxicillin : Amoxicillin does not treat gonorrhea. You need a different antibiotic. Often, people with gonorrhea have other sexually transmitted diseases, also, so your should see a doctor and be checked. If i was taking amoxicillin for my tonsillitis will the amoxicillin help cure gonarrhea because my sex partner say he has gonarrhea?

If i was taking amoxicillin for my tonsillitis will the amoxicillin help cure gonarrhea because my sex partner say he has gonarrhea?

No! See doc asap!: Gonorrhea (gc) has become a very resistant bacteria. To make matters worse, when there is gc there is often other bacteria that need to be treated. I would be concerned the tonsillitis could even be from the gc itself. Gc needs an injected antibiotic called Ceftriaxone to cure it and it would be worth being treated for chlamydia at same time which needs a different pill. See your doctor asap! ...Read more
