What is the glycemic index and glycemic load of cheetos snacks?

Glycemic index: Glycemic index is an estimate of how much a food will raise your blood sugar after you eat it. Each unit = 1 gram of glucose -- it measures carbohydrate content. If it's greater than 20, it's considered high. For cheetos, the number is 6, but there's not much nutritional value in them either. You can look it up yourself at: http://nutritiondata.Self.Com/facts/custom/1719926/2. ...Read more

A Little vs A Lot: The glycemic index is a number representing the ability of a food, relative to that of glucose, to increase the level of glucose in the blood. Does blending food raise its glycemic index ?

Does blending food raise its glycemic index
?

Not really: If you blend foods and keep the fiber in them- the glycemic index should remain the same. The stomach churns the food almost as well. Many people who blend foods, strain them and take out the fiber, the pulp, the seeds. These sources of fiber when removed, would increase the glycemic index and glycemic load delivered to the body. ...Read more

Do gluten free foods increase your blood glycemic index?

Glycemic index: A high glycemic index means a food turns into sugar readily in your body. Foods containing gluten are grains, and are carbohydrates, so they have a high glycemic index. Gluten free foods can be either high or low depending on their carbohydrate content. Sugar is gluten free but has the highest glycemic index. Meat is gluten free but has a low glycemic index. There's no consistent relationship. ...Read more

Could consuming low glycemic index sugar lead to diabetes?

Could consuming low glycemic index sugar lead to diabetes?

Can be tricky: Glycemic index refers to the impact that food has on the blood sugar level. Some foods are absorbed very rapidly and raise the blood sugar rapidly (sugar, simple carbohydrates) while others have very low impact on blood sugar and thus a low glycemic index (meats, fat). There are some "sugars" promoted as low glycemic index, but this almost is contradictory. Moderation is the key with diabetes risk. ...Read more

Are low carb diets healthier than diets with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean proteins?

Are low carb diets healthier than diets with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and lean proteins?

Not necessarily: There is no single diet that is best for everyone. I believe it is wise to minimize sugars and simple starches, but i believe a diet with whole grains, vegetables, fruit and low-fat proteins is healthier than a strict low carb diet (which is relatively high in fat and protein). See http://drrandybaker.Com/2013/01/20/diet-and-health/ for my essay on the pros and cons of various diets. ...Read more

Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?

Is gluten free pasta ( maize starch, soy flour, potato starch and rice starch)with about 40 gm carbohydrates good for cholesterol ?

Does not matter: Since 90% of the cholesterol is produced by the body regardless of your diet, the above would not noticeably affect your cholesterol level. Do note that too much carb may not be good for your health. I don't believe extreme diet does anyone any good. Just eat anything in moderation and exercise at least 3 hrs a week will likely keep you in better shape. ...Read more

What is the glycemic index of sugar substitutes?

Glycemic index is…: …used to measure to what extent carbohydrate-containing foods can raise your blood sugar levels. It's not possible to measure the glycemic index of foods that don't contain carbohydrates, such as meat, fish, eggs & cheese. Benefits and dangers of low carb high fat ketogenic diets?

Extremes: I believe it is better for most to eat nearly everything in moderation instead of going on an extreme diet. I don't see how getting ketosis, which may reduce your appetite, can be good for the body. As for the high fat, too much saturated fat is likely harmful because it promotes inflammation. If you must, try unsaturated fat. ...Read more
