When one takes a drug, such as heroin or alcohol, repeatedly, 'tolerance' develops because more of the drug is needed to give the same effect on the body/brain; e.g. Liver enzymes r stimulated to metabolize the drug faster and faster. There may be a strong genetic predisposition to addiction, some studies suggesting that 1 of 10 people will become dependent on alcohol or some ...Read more
Different tests: Insulin & glucose are 2 different ways to measure diabetes. Insulin is produced by pancreas to keep sugars under control. We measure glucose to see how well sugars are controlled. We can measure Insulin to determine how much effort pancreas is making to control sugars. Think of glucose as speedometer & Insulin as tachometer (hgba1c is avg trip speed - ask a car nut if this doesn't make sense). ...Read more
Recently bloodwork for fasting insulin. How is this different that a glucose tolerance test or a fasting glucose test?
Different tests: Insulin & glucose are 2 different ways to measure diabetes. Insulin is produced by pancreas to keep sugars under control. We measure glucose to see how well sugars are controlled. Think of glucose as speedometer & Insulin as tachometer (hgba1c is avg trip speed - ask a car nut if this doesn't make sense). Glucose tolerance test requires drinking sugar whereas other 2 tests don't. ...Read more
I am prediabetic with higher blood sugar and insulin levels. L just had a 3 hour glucose tolerance test. Fasting sugar is 63, insulin is 2. Meaning?
Doesn't matter: The numbers aren't really important or valuable. If you're overweight and have high glucose (particularly with a positive family history) you need education, diet, exercise, weight reductio and maybe medication -- not just a diagnosis. The diagnosis doesn't help you get healthier. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Have GTT test. Blood glucose normal. O hour and 1 hour urine glucose negative but 2 hour urine glucose is trace. False positive or renal glycosuria?
Newer recommendation: Is that non-diabetic pregnant women undergo a 2-hour 75-gram oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28 weeks of gestation. Women should be fasting for this test, and a fasting glucose level should be included. If any one of the following values are abnormal, you have gestational diabetes: fasting at 92 or above (mg/dl), one-hour at 180 or above, two-hour at 153 or above. ...Read more

Fasting glucose 85. then GTT hour 1glucose 84, hour 2 glucose 94. what would cause this odd response?
Normal variability: So for that test, you basically get a dose of glucose to see if your blood sugar remains elevated. Our bodies respond very quickly to glucose, meaning that it gets taken up by our muscles and liver almost immediately after it enters the blood stream. Our body's "thermostat" is set to keep the blood sugar level between 70-99. Over 100 indicates a problem with glucose metabolism. Yours is normal. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

A check for diabetes: The GTT is a way for us to see who is at highest risk of diabetes. It is recommended that everyone be screened during their pregnancy, usually around 24-28 weeks. We will give you a bottle of a very sugary drink. You have five minutes to drink it all! Then a hour later we do a blood test to see how you metabolized the sugar. If you are high risk you may need further testing or treatment. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Not an approved test: Hi. You could conceivably weigh out 75 grams of glucose at home and use a finger stick blood glucose meter and do something very similar to a real, diagnostic Standard 2-Hour OGTT, and get a good sense for your glycemic status, but there is no test approved for home diagnosis. Serum glucose should be used (not whole capillary blood). If you want an OGTT, I surest you go get a real one. Good luck! ...Read more
Took two, 3 hour glucose tolerance /insulin tests, one test had low blood sugar AND second test had high insulin both in the 3rd hour. How to treat?
The blood sugar concentration or blood glucose level is the amount of glucose (sugar) present in the blood of a human or animal. The body naturally tightly regulates blood glucose levels as a part of metabolic homeostasis. Glucose is the primary source of energy for the body's cells, and blood lipids (in the form of fats and oils) are primarily ...Read more
