Do you know are all cases of glioblastoma multiforme fatal?

Not all: There are survivors of gbm - but this is less than 5% at 5 years. I have 2 known survivors....But more than a hundred who have died. ...Read more

Are all cases of glioblastoma multiforme fatal? Can you share some sources?

Are all cases of glioblastoma multiforme fatal? Can you share some sources?

No. Not anymore.: Ten years ago, it could have been said that all GBM cases were fatal, with little exageration.

5-year survival with state-of-the-art treatment today, though, is about 16% in the latest Optune study.

If you are young, neurologically intact, and a good candidate for surgery, then your odds are higher still.

Is it possible to resect a glioblastoma multiforme?

Is it possible to resect a glioblastoma multiforme?

Generally not: Glioblastoma is a high grade glial tumor. Glial tumors do not have distinct borders because glial cells have extensive cell projections and grow in a network, rather than with discrete borders. Surgery can be performed to remove the bulk of tumor, but it is generally not possible to remove every tumor cell. Also, the location of the tumor often limits extent of surgery. ...Read more

In what way can we cure glioblastoma multiforme tumours?

Hard to say: Cure is a complicated word to use, but the chance of living five years with GBM has increased from 0.5% twelve years ago to 16% in the latest Optune study.

Who knows what the next twelve years will bring?

Could you give me a vivid medical description of how glioblastoma multiforme works?

Could you give me a vivid medical description of how glioblastoma multiforme works?

Mutation and growth: Like all cancers, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an abnormal growth of cells (in this case arising in the brain) triggered by a randomly occurring mutation. The growth causes pressure on normal brain tissue, causing neurologic symptoms that lead to its discovery. It can be treated with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy with better and better results, but remains incurable. ...Read more

Glioblastoma multiforme, concerned?

Serious diagnosis: Glioblastoma multiforme is something that deserves aggressive attention. Although the overall prognosis for patients is poor, there are subsets of patients that have modest rates of being alive at 5 years with newer medications. Also, even newer treatments continue to be tested, including vaccines. Typically surgery is done first, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. ...Read more

Glioblastoma multiforme, should I be concerned?

Although overall this diagnosis does not carry a good prognosis, some subsets of patients do better than others. Also, newer treatments continue to be investigated, including vaccine treatments. ...Read more

What are the success stories of anyone surviving glioblastoma multiforme?

What are the success stories of anyone surviving glioblastoma multiforme?

Bad tumor: Cerebral tumors of this type are horrible events, and surgical excision may be useful for yrs. We now have some promising medications, and some newer techniques surgically to implant meds. Yet, the best we can do is prolong life for a while. Unfortunately, there are very few success stories. More understanding and research is needed. ...Read more

My sister has been diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme and she's been alive more than 3 years since. Is she doing well or does she have no time left?

My sister has been diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme and she's been alive more than 3 years since. Is she doing well or does she have no time left?

Hard to tell: Sorry to hear about your sister, but it sounds like she is well into several years of survival. Gbm is an aggressive diagnosis, and many patients do not make it to the three year mark.

While many families and patients want to know the "time left, " it's usually impossible to tell.

We in oncology believe it's more about quality than quantity; hopefully her quality of life is ok.

Best wishes. ...Read more
