Hello, My son, 6 months now was prescribed Fenistil for common cold and runny nose not assiciated with allergy. Is it ok?
Off label use.: Fenistil is an anti allergy medication used for itching and rashes due to allergy. It can relieve inflammation. It has antihistamine and anticholinergic effects and is a stronger medication than I would consider using in a six month old child. Cold symptoms at this age are best treated with simple measures such as saline nose drops to relieve congestion and Tylenol for discomfort or fever. ...Read more

No: We don't use cold medications or antihistamines (like Fenistil) in young babies. For moderate (or worse) symptoms in a 2 month-old such as coughing, crying, or runny nose, the baby's doctor or the emergency room needs to see the baby. Two months is very young, and such babies need to have their illnesses evaluated unless symptoms are very mild. If very mild, one can talk with the doctor by phone. ...Read more
HI, My 2 week son is having allergy/Hives and paediatrician advised Fenistil drops for him. Can yo please advise if it is safe for 2 week old baby? Tx
My 11 month baby had cold before 2 days n still hav runy nose the doctor gave her 9 drops of fenistil twice daily for 5 days is it safe to give her?
Unnecessary: In the US we believe the use of such antihistamine products in infants is often unnecessary and potentially harmful. While possibly safe, one effect is thickening secretions/drainage. This can lead to narrowing of their nasal airway and more work of breathing. I haven't used such products in that age for decades. It does give you something to do, which is the only value some see in it. ...Read more
Can I use anti histamine Fenistil gel (Dimethindene Maleate) for a bite while I'm in very early pregnancy?
No major risk: Most antihistamines are considered safe for pregnancy (Category B) nowadays although I am not familiar with the product you are using. I do not expect any measurable absorption from the topical application of an antihistamine on the skin and thus it would be extremely unlikely that even if a trace of it gets to the fetus. A hydrocortisone cream would work better on an itchy insect bite. ...Read more
12mo daughter w/ cold&cough. Pedia said to give 8drops fenistil twice daily&2 ml prospan twice daily. The mucus from nose is clear&hear mucus in coughin?
Infants cold & cough: Fenistil is an antihistamine, not available in the U.S. Prospan is also not available here. General speaking American Academic of Pediatrics does not support treatment of common colds of viral origin in infants and children with cough or cold medication. Supportive measures such as warm fluid, nasal saline irrigation and hydration. The viral illness has to go to its course about 1 to 2 weeks. ...Read more

Baby has a cough and runny nose now he has that rattle noise/ wet cough done humidifier, saline drops any suggestions?
My son Aiden has a cough and runny nose no other symptoms such I take him to his Dr. Or just continue giving him benadryl (diphenhydramine) for children?
18 week old doesn't have runny nose but sounds congested for past 10 days. Chest sounds fine (I think) Tried humidifier & saline drops. What can it be?
Baby nose: As babies face and head grow early in life, the nasal passages can actually narrow out a little bit. Since the nasal passages are so very narrow to start with in infants, a little bit of additional narrowing can lead to a lot of noise. He (or she) will outgrow this as face fills out in the second half of the first year. Nothing to worry about as long s no other symptoms and eating fine! ...Read more
My 2 ear old has a runny nose and her ear started hurting. I put some herbal drops and noticed a lot of blood in her other ear, what should I do?
Time to seek help: Two year old kids are likely to have an ear infection when they present as described. Blood in the ear canal could mean a ruptured ear drum from infection or a kid placing foreign objects in the canal to try to poke at a pain source, resulting in a bloody scratch in the canal. ...Read more
What is harmful about giving children < 2 allegra (fexofenadine)? My 10 mth old has had a constant runny nose with sneezing for 5 weeks. My 4 y/o has allergies also.
I would use > 6m: I find this helpful in many kids & use it over 6m of age. However, most congestion/sneezing in infants & toddlers is related to illness or nasal irritants like smoke, fragrance, fumes & the like & the primary rx is avoidance. Antihistamines have no effect when used for drainage triggered by irritants. ...Read more

Stop the rub: I consider the vick's rub an air pollutant when used in infants. It can prolong or worsen congestion. A liberal wash out of her nose with saline can remove some of the irritants & thin out the mucous. Sometimes you must wash out the nose using saline like a garden hose to be effective. ...Read more

How do you treat a post nasal drip chronic cough/ no runny nose in a 6 year old. Have been giving Claritin and Flonase for 3 months with no relief.?
Depends: ARe you sure the chronic cough is due to post nasal drip? It could be caused by asthma or reflux. Also you may not be using the Flonase properly, make sure it is pointed outward toward ear and use consistently on a daily basis. Claritin might not be strong enough antihistamine. Have child checked by pediatrician or allergist. ...Read more

Had a runny nose mix with mucus and tear drops dripping out of 1 nostril for about month now. Had sinus surgery 8 months ago. Could it be CSF leak?
Seriously doubt it!: Your symptoms sound more like basic, run of the mill rhinorrhea - likely caused by allergies or viral illness. Let the ENT who did your surgery know your concerns and symptoms. They can examine you, help determine cause, and provide treatment to get you some relief. ...Read more
