Is new free fluid & tiny calcification in pelvis of 58 yr male bad? (he had gastrectomy last year to remove GIST tumor, but recent CT shows no tumor)
Gist tumor: Calcification is usually related to old scar tissue that becomes visible on xray. Many thing can cause a little bit of fluid in the pelvis. It's very stressful when you get scans and things look good but there are new findings. Could be, need test: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are be either malignant or benign. However a 12 cm lesion is more likely to be malignant and needs additional testing including an endoscopy with ultrasound and biopsy (usually done by a gastroenterologist). My mother just had surgery on her stomach and they removed a tumor. What is a gist tumor, and what caused it?
Variable: Most all gist tumors are benign. But they will likely grow over time, and there is a risk that they can become malignant or cancerous and spread to other organs such as the liver. I do not know how long one can live with this tumor, but it is best not to wait for it to get too large.
