If this is inflamed, cystic acne, a steroid injection can be helpful to calm it down while other treatment kicks in. Tough question..: Simple question, but not easy to answer. It is easier to prevent acne than treating severe acne because severe/cystic acnes will cause scars which are permanent. Inflammatory acne are often treated with topical benzoy/antibiotic combo or oral antibiotics.
