Gestational Sac Larger Than Fetus
At 6 wks both we’re measuring exactly 6 wks but at 9wks 5 days the fetus was measuring appropriately but the gestational sac was measuring 8wks 6days?
Measurement error?: It might be within measurement error - depending on how the image is taken of the fetus and gestational sac, maybe it's at an off-angle. It takes only a couple mm to account for a <1w difference in estimation. Regardless, I don't believe there is anything indicated to be done at this time but wait for next ultrasound. Best of luck ...Read more
My fetus is measuring 7 weeks but gestational sac is 1 week behind. Is that bad? Heartbeat is 140bpm. Is there anything I can do to help it grow?
Pretty sure that my fetus s no less than 5w but gestational sac is barely seen. 3days ago hCG 4518. Today 8315. No pain no bleeding. Should I worry?
No: Still very early. You should be able to see a lot more in just 1 week. ...Read more
Sonographer could not see fetus (only gestational sac) and said I am 5wks 2days. Do you think everything is ok with baby? Or is it just too early?
Very Good Question: With early ultrasound, it is now possible to see embryo heart motion as early as 6 weeks. While your concern is valid, repeating the ultrasound in 1-2 weeks will reveal the health of the pregnancy. Early pregnancy failure is a possibility I am sorry to say. However, if you do make it to 8 weeks with an embryonic heart beat, the chances of loosing the pregnancy drop dramatically to about 3%. ...Read more
Ultrasound; Gestational sac at 10 weeks looks 5 times bigger than fetus (which looks 7 weeks) should I be concerned?
Not really: There are several parameters that are measured to follow fetal growth in utero: biparietal diameter, femur length. They don't measure size of fetal sac, so no comparable data available and it's just nonsense to talk about it. ...Read more
Ultrasound says my fetus is 6 weeks 2 days but my gestational sac is 7 weeks 2 days. Heartbeat is normal. Is everything ok?
Most likely: The most accurate measurement of the fetus is the crown rump length. The gestational sac is like a fluid filled balloon, not a perfect sphere. So the measurement of the sac can vary quite a bit depending on what part was measured. If there is already a fetal heart beat, that is a great sign. Keep your follow up appointments with your OB doctor. ...Read more
I'm pregnant and my fetus should be at least 6 weeks but there s nothing on vaginal ultrasound but gestational sac with age of 5 weeks?
Dating: Everyone's fetus shows up at slightly different times. I would recommend a couple HCG levels to insure they are rising and repeat us in 2 weeks. ...Read more
Is a small gestational sac in relation to the fetus a sign of a chromosomal abnormality. Fetus 9w sac 7w. Doctor and research have me very worried.
Hard to answer...:
At such an early stage, imaging and interpretation is hard.
There are associations between size and abnormalities.
But it is impossible to look at a minimally smaller size and conclude anything, especially chromosomal disorders.
It is best not to worry, but follow this serially and monitor progress. Your OB is the best judge of this and should advice you of intervention if at all needed. ...Read more
Hemorrhage, lower then average hormones, fetus smaller then normal, gestational sac 2 weeks behind fetus. Chances of trisomy or other abnormalities?
Maybe, miscarriage is: More likely. Not knowing how many weeks pregnant you are, it's difficult to give you more specific information. Usually the above consistent with early pregnancy loss. It is best to follow closely with Gyn/OB. Also try to avoid air travel or long car rides, trips in remote areas until this is settled. Miscarriage is potentially serious and can result in significant blood loss, so call 911 4 help ...Read more
I am pregnant with 5.7 week. Bhcg level is 7064. Transvaginal scan shows 8mm gestational sac with no fetus. Have vaginal bleeding. Is that normal?

Is it possible to not have fetal pole with a 13mm gestational sac and within a weeks time a fetal pole is seen?
Pregnancy: You shouls see a fetal pole when the gestational sac measures 18-20 mm. With a sac of 13 mm you should see a yolk sac. ...Read more
Couple reasons: Normally at 6 weeks you should see a sac, a yolk sac, the fetal pole and an early heartbeat. When you don't see what you expect, there are 3 possibilities: the pregnancy is not quite as far as you think, the pregnancy is abnormal, or it is just hard to see on ultrasound. So I would just repeat in 1 week and know for sure! ...Read more
Vag u/s says 6w 4 days. There were 2 yolks and 1 fetal pole/heartbeat. Same gestational sac. Could the other develop a heartbeat in the next few days?
Vag u/s says 6w 4 days. There were 2 yolks and 1 fetal pole/heartbeat. Same gestational sac. Could the other develop into a baby in the next few days?
Maybe: Your obstetrician will want to closely follow you by ultrasound due to the abnormality seen in one yolk sac. Take your prenatal vitamins in any event. ...Read more
Hi, LMP march7, u/s at 7-8 shows no fetal pole. Only gestational sac. Hgc level87000. No bleeding. Is thdre hope for pregnant to continue?
No: If your HCG levels are 87, 000 and you can not see fetal pole this is definitely not a normal pregnancy. We call this a blighted ovum. See your doctor for follow up ultrasound. Typically this second ultrasound you get is used to confirm the diagnosis. Then your doctor will discuss with you your options. ...Read more
U/s at possibly 7w5d gestational sac and fetal pole measuring at 6w1d but no yolk sac or heartbeat. Miscarriage or miscalculation?
Dates could be off: I would not expect to see definite fetal heart activity at 6wk 1dy. A repeat ultrasound in one week will resolve the question. If the pregnancy is viable there should be appropriate interval growth and definite fetal heart activity. If not, then there had been an early fetal demise. In cases of blighted ovum a fetal pole does not develop. ...Read more
Ultrasound put me at 5 weeks 3 days but we only sac a Gestational Sac with no yolk or fetal pole is that normal? My HCG levels the day after U/S 9152
Early Pregnancy & US: The important thing is to know when you ovulated. You really can't know at this point. You may actually be further along and this absence of the fetal pole indicates an abnormal pregnancy or simply you are too early. Without knowing the day of ovulation, you must simply repeat the US in about a week. By then, fetal pole and heart beat should be evident. ...Read more
U/s at possibly 7w5d gestational sac and fetal pole measuring at 6w1d but no yolk sac or heartbeat. Miscarriage or miscalculation? Hcg dropped
Obgyn evaluation: Your Obgyn will need to interpret the sonogram for you. We can not make a specific diagnosis such as this on Healthtap. In general if a fetal pole is seen in a gestational sac that large and there is no heartbeat then this would indicate a miscarriage. Please follow up with your Obgyn to discuss your specific case. ...Read more
I am 6w4d pregnant through day5 FET. On my first OB U/S, we could just see Gestational sac but no yolk sac or fetal pole, HCG is > 12000. What to do?
I have uterus didelphys, am supposed to be 7wks. Went to ER got u/s, they saw a gestational sac& yolk sac, no fetal pole. Could dates be off?
Yes: All pregnancy dating scans are estimates. Even though a single date is given, the actual date could also be before the estimated date or after the estimated date. In this question's situation, one should follow-up with the Ob-Gyn doctor to discuss what the emergency was, that caused one to go to the Emergency Room where the ultrasound was done (something serious or emergent must have happened). ...Read more
Single intruterine fundal gestational sac is seen with no detectable fetal pole development at 7 weeks 4 days will the baby survive looks like 5weeks?
Less likely: So, the first assumption is that the dating is correct. If you are truly 7+4 weeks, there should be both a fetal pole and a heartbeat. But for various reasons you may be only 5-6 weeks so worth repeating ultrasound to make sure ...Read more
Can just seeing the gestational sac and yolk sac and no fetal pole or heartbeat normal at 6 weeks and 2 days?
Is it normal to have no fetal pole at 5 weeks and 4 days, only gestational sac & yolk, hCG 8000 and have tripled in the last few days.
Normal: It is normal not to see the fetal pole that early. Continue to follow-up with your doctor and good luck! ...Read more
I had an ultersound done 1/22/2014 there was a gestational sac and yolk sac but no fetal pole. I"m 8 weeks 2 days. Do I need to have a D&C?
Maybe: By 8 weeks 2 days you expect to see a heart beat on ultrasound. It is possible that you are not as far along as you think or that this is a blighted ovum/missed miscarriage. To be sure you can check quantitaive HCG's and look for the appropriate doubling or do a repeat ultrasound in 1 week. Remember that this sort of thing is not because of something you did or didn't do. Hope this helps. ...Read more

Went for 2nd ultrasound at 8 weeks this time was able to detect fetal pole yolk sac and gestational sac but still no heartbeat not sure why?
Dating: If you saw a fetal pole and yolk sac, that's a good sign. You have an intrauterine pregnancy. You aren't 8 weeks, because cardiac activity initiates between 5 1/2 weeks and 6 1/2 weeks, so likely you are much earlier than you calculated based on last menstrual period. Hopefully your doctor scheduled a follow up us to detect fetal heartbeat? If not, would recommend, to make sure no miscarriage. ...Read more
