What are genetically modified foods?

What are genetically modified foods?

Lab inserted genes: Scientists insert extra genes, often to make plants resistant so farmers can use more pesticides. The most common gm crops are soy, corn & cotton (seed), which are ingredients in many processed foods. Canola & papaya are often gm too. Gm foods and ingredients are not required to be labelled in us, but certified organic foods are not allowed to make use of genetic modification or gm ingredients. ...Read more

Potassium is an essential electrolyte, important in the functioning of many organs including the heart, kidneys, muscles, nerves, and digestive system. Deficiency can be caused by diseases such as kidney failure, vomiting, and diarrhea, or by drugs such as diuretics. ...Read more

Are genetically modified foods safe for kids?

Are genetically modified foods safe for kids?

Depends: The safety of genetically modified food depends upon the proteins or other substances produced by the transferred genetic material. Transferred genetic material itself is generally not of concern. Concerns are raised when the modified food contain substances significantly different in quality and quantity than counterpart substances in natural food. ...Read more

Are genetically modified foods (gmos) bad for your health?

Are genetically modified foods (gmos) bad for your health?

Probably REALLY BAD: The reason I hedge a bit is that there have been absolutely no studies done showing gmo foods are safe (or harmful) for humans. However, many animal studies have found disturbing evidence of significant harm to health & there is no reason to think humans would not suffer the same adverse consequences! See http://drrandybaker. Com/2013/04/22/organic-food-diet/ for a detailed discussion & useful links. ...Read more

I need to know what is wrong with genetically modified food?

I need to know what is wrong with genetically modified food?

Modern times: The hope is making foods that last longer, better yield / nutrition, can survive plant diseases, insects, etc., helping feed our 7 billion people. If you were to read all the fear stories, you'd be reading uncritically. In fact, before the obvious triumphs of biotech in medicine, it was vilified too. My main problem is the behavior of the hated corporations that seek to maximize profits on GMO's. ...Read more

Is genetically modified food really dangerous? Germans think so.

Is genetically modified food really dangerous? Germans think so.

Probably not: Genetically modified food has not been shown to cause problems when consumed by humans for a variety of reasons. The genome of the plant is modified using genetic engineering rather than by exposing plants to radiation to cause mutations. This might help to provide plant disease resistance and other benefits. There have been some environmental issues. ...Read more

I was wondering what are the pros and cons of genetically modified food?

I was wondering what are the pros and cons of genetically modified food?

Very difficult: The pro's focus around the ability to more readily grow "hardy" crops that are resistant to pests (bugs) and drought and sometimes boost certain nutrients. The cons focus around the possibility of our body reacting to the genetic modifications in a fashion that is less than desirable/healthy. There is limited good data about how harmful (if at all) GMO's may be, but why not avoid them if possible. ...Read more

Can you tell me, are genetically modified foods harmful to human health?

Can you tell me, are genetically modified foods harmful to human health?

I say 'no': Some of my colleagues here will disagree. What I can tell you is that the fear stories that I've reviewed don't square with my basic knowledge of biology, that fearmongering is profitable, and that before the obvious triumphs of biotechnology in medicine, the procedures that now save lives daily were vilified as 'N*zi medicine.' No scientist that I know personally avoids GMO food. ...Read more

Are doctors generally for or against genetically modified foods?

Are doctors generally for or against genetically modified foods?

I'm with him: Dr Friedlander says it well. Genetic modification leads to crops that resist disease better & yield more product. The pseudo-science that is thrown at the public to suggest it is unhealthy is hype. I consider anyone who falls for the idea that it is bad similar to a cult. Believe what you wish, but it doesn't pass the rational test with me. ...Read more

Can you tell me if that genetically modified foods should be labeled?

I say "No": Today, biotech is part of everyone's life. If you have a health emergency, chances are you'll receive a biotech medication. Despite 30 years of trying, nobody's showed a health risk to GMO foods. The one famous paper was the most obvious fake since Wakefield's. Making labels would dignify fearmongering. The companies are noxious, not the foods they help produce. Others here will disagree. Cheers. ...Read more

I was wondering what are the health benefits/risks of genetically modified foods?

I was wondering what are the health benefits/risks of genetically modified foods?

I know of none: When the benefits and safety of biotechnology in medicine became undeniable, the scaremongers switched overnight to attacking agriculture. If any of the terrible "scare" stuff was true, after thirty years a few of the research piranhas at the NIH would have made their names by demonstrating it. A few folks here have concerns about GMO food; I'd advise you to focus instead on life's known dangers. ...Read more

What do docs think? Should genetically modified foods (gm foods) be allowed to sell in the general market?

What do docs think? Should genetically modified foods (gm foods) be allowed to sell in the general market?

Yes: Genetic modification has been around since the first understanding of genetic influences were used to hybrid roses/other plants. It has produced plants with better productivity & more resistant to disease. The fear mongering spread by purists that declare this dangerous to humans is inflated hype. I consider it equal to the general lies we were sold about eggs/ butter/ & similar products. ...Read more

Can the fda approve genetically modified foods (gmo) for human consumption?

Can the fda approve genetically modified foods (gmo) for human consumption?

YES but...: GMO foods are approved by the FDA before being sold for human consumption. See http://www. Fda. Gov/food/foodscienceresearch/biotechnology/ucm346030.htm
However, I feel the FDA has been derelict in its duty to protect consumers by ignoring evidence that GMO foods may be harmful. Many high-ranking FDA officials have worked for Monsanto- see http://tinyurl. Com/ao96zvp

Does genetically modified food cause autism? Gmo's were released in the early 90s and since then autism cases increased by 600%. Are they safe to eat?

Does genetically modified food cause autism? Gmo's were released in the early 90s and since then autism cases increased by 600%. Are they safe to eat?

I believe it's safe: There's a huge amount of money to be made frightening people, and these folks have no reason to tell the truth (unlike physicians bound by law). Gmo's contain no substance that a reasonable person would worry about being toxic. The increased autism diagnosis rate reflects both awareness and politics (kids with "autism" get more resources.) and there's no a single non-fake scientific paper. ...Read more

Please help! What is the effect of genetically engineered (modified) food on human health?

Please help! What is the effect of genetically engineered (modified) food on human health?

None: The poison is in the behavior of the corporations and the protesters, not the technology, which has increased food yields and should belong to humankind, not jealously guarded by mean-minded profiteers. Despite the inflammatory rhetoric and claims, the scientific community -- the most cutthroat of truth-seekers -- has found no health dangers despite 30 years of close study. Don't be afraid. ...Read more

Why is our food genetically modified? Is it healthier that way?

Why is our food genetically modified? Is it healthier that way?

Not particularly: Some GMO's are modified to increase micronutrient concentrations like vitamin in certain strains of rice. But mostly foods are modified to allow for more "hardy" crops that resist pests, chemicals and drought. ...Read more
