Genetic Disease (Overview)

A genetic disease is a disease that is caused by a defect in the genetic (dna) material in a gene(s). It can be inherited and mosy pose a risk to other family members and/or to future children. For many genetic diseases there are molecular tests that allow detection of a change(s) called mutations, we can also detect deltions or other changes to the gene's dna that can also result in a genetic dis.

How does genetic diseases cause a person to be more susceptible to cancer?

Profound question!: Some (not all) inherited traits affect genes that have to do with the control of cell division, cell growth, and programmed cell death. Others regulate the repair of dna damage that occasionally happens when cells divide. Those messed up genes can result in cancer development. Great question, thanks. ...Read more

Could you tell me what is the name of the defect that causes non-inherited genetic diseases?

Spontaneous mutation: Some inheritable disorders are also caused by spontaneous mutations. Advanced paternal age ^es risk. Nondisjunction = paired chromosomes don't separate during cell division. The fetus receives 2 or 0 copies from egg or sperm. Advanced maternal age ^es risk. . Copy repeat errors are similar, when baby inherits 0 or 2 copies of a small sequence of genes from mom or dad. ...Read more
