Genetic Brain Disorders (Overview)

Genetic brain disorder is a condition in which a person has a problem in the brain, related to a defect or mutation in his genes (DNA). Some conditions have symptoms in infancy, some appear gradually as a child grows, while other conditions show up in adulthood. These disorders include problems forming nerve cell connections, problems handling nutrients such as amino acids, problems getting waste material out of nerve cells, etc...

Recommend evaluation: Most brain tumors are not inherited. But it depends on the type and other associated conditions a patient has. If there are many cancers in a family at an early age, especially if rare cancers, the risk of them being inherited increases. Only about 5% of brain tumors are linked to a genetic condition.
