Days to weeks

The recovery time varies with the size and location of the hernia and the method of repair. The most common hernia operation I perform is via the laparoscopic approach. I encourage my patients to return to their baseline aerobic activities as soon as possible, typically within 7-10 days. In general, I advise against heavy lifting for 3 weeks.

Ask your surgeon

You need to clear this with your own surgeon, but as a rule I let my laparoscopic HH repairs return to activity in 2-3 weeks. If it was done through an incision, you should wait 4-6 weeks to start strenuous activity. But, again, ask your surgeon for her/his restrictions. Good luck.

Avoid re-operation!

Patience! Great you want to stay physically fit & get back to weightlifting right away. However, I'm sure your surgeon told you how long to hold off on heavy activity to promote healing. Lifting sooner than he recommended risks a re-herniation & potentially more involved surgical repair that will further delay you resuming lifting. Best wait until he checks the operative site & clears you to lift.

Gangrene

if an incarcerated hernia is not treated in time, the trapped portion of bowel can become gangrenous. This could lead to a life-threatening infection. If your hernia is painful or doesn't easily go back inside the body you should see a surgeon ASAP

Emergency surgery

A hernia can get "stuck" and cause a lack of blood to that part of the intestine that is stuck out through the hernia opening. This is an incarcerated hernia and requires emergency surgery. Although this doesn't happen often, you don't want to wait for this to occur.

Emergency Surgery

All hernias share in common the potential for bowel to "get stuck" (incarcerated)within the hernia sac, which can lead to intestinal death if not treated promptly. Emergency surgery is higher risk and has less options for repair. Accordingly, it is always best to repair the hernia BEFORE this occurs. Not all hernias have the same risk of incarceration--see a hernia surgeon to determine this.

How long should you wait to drink alcohol after hiatial hernia repair?

Answered by:
Dr. David Earle

Alcohol per se does not have any specific time restriction. If you're taking narcotic pain medicine however I would avoid alcohol use. Furthermore, carbonated beverage can be problematic in terms of bloating and probably should be avoided For between four and six weeks, or at least as long until you're able to reserve resume normal food intake. Call your surgeon with any questions however because they know your case a bit better. Best of luck.

Incisional hernia

This is a tough question to answer as not all hernias are equivalent. Smaller hernias may allow patients to return to desk jobs in a few days. Larger hernias may take 6-12 weeks prior returning to work. Manual laborers will also require more time prior to returning to work. This is a question that needs to be discussed with your operating surgeon.

Depends on your status. Do you still have a bariatric issue??? At minimum, waiting 3 to 6 months after your ventral hernia repair is recommended. Okay to talk to your surgery team and your regular doc about the bariatric issue. Stay on diet in the meantime. Good luck.
