Gastrografin Enema For Constipation
Depends: Most commonly, barium is administered into the rectum (along with air) for barium enema. If there is suspicion of bowel perforation, water soluble gastrografin is used instead. Gastrografin is hyperosmolar and can cause fluid shifts (fluid moves from the blood to the GI tract) and should be used with caution in hemodynamically unstable patients. Colon is then imaged with x-rays/fluoroscopy.
Think it over-: There are many premade enema kits that are safe and effective. Perhaps you should try these if you are constipated. Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) natural fiber like prunes or oatmeal or fiber capsules may all keep you regular. Anything smaller than the size of your stool may be used to deliver an enema safely. Water may be used, HOWEVER there is probably NOT other entirely safe ingredient (soap/coffee/molasses).
I am experiencing severe constipation I have tried laxatives, enemas, and diet change and nothing has brought lasting results
Change your diet and: Fluids. Eat a high fiber diet between 20-25 grams per day, regular meal times and drink 80-100 oz of caffeine free alcohol free fluids daily. If you exercise and should add 20 oz per 30 minutes of strenuous exercise. Some meds contribute to constipation so take the meds with full glass of fluid instead of a sip in addition to the above recommended fluids. See your doctor if no improvement with abo.See 1 more doctor answer

Try oral laxatives: Have you tried laxatives already? Miralax (polyethylene glycol) otc should work well. Enema is unpleasant and is used as last resort. You should also talk to your local doctor on how to regulate your bowel if you are chronically constipated. Taking food rich in fibers or fibers supplement would help.

See a GI: Foods high in fat tend to constipate you. Foods high in fiber favor looser stools. Fruits vegetable, whole grains are excellent sources of fiber. Also, fiber only works if u are well hydrated so increase water, juice etc. See a GI specialist to rule out another cause of your problem. Supplements can then be added until you have regular bms. Very rarely you may need surgery.

How often should I use an enema for constipation? Are the fleet enemas (sodium bisphosphate) ok twice a week?
See your doctor: See your doctor. You may gain sufficient benefit from increased fiber and fluid in your diet so that enemas won't be needed. However, a complete history and physical is crucial to exclude other causes of constipation such as hypothyroidism or anatomic problems. Enemas do have potential complications: I have cared for patients with rectal perforation after enemas.See 1 more doctor answer
