If I have gastritis & im on Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) but I still have nausea, acid indigestion, etc. Does this mean Dexilant (dexlansoprazole) is not working? Do I switch ppi's?

Depends...: ...Duration of treatment, dose of dexilant, (dexlansoprazole) inciting factors (ongoing NSAID use, tobacco, alcohol), likelihood of excessive acid production (e.g. Gastrinoma), risk factors (e.g. Prior ulcers, family history), biopsy results. Please provide your prescribing doctor with your response to these questions so he can best advise you. ...Read more

I was dx. 5 mo. Ago with bile reflux gastritis s/p lap choly. Reglan/PPI not working to control n/v & constant burning in esophagus. Other options?

Bile reflux gastriti: Discuss with your doctor use of carafate, (sucralfate) adding ranitidine or even adding Questran which binds bile acid (usually used for diarrhea). They now have a new system called LINX -a magnetic bracelet for the lower esophageal sphincter which helps close the gastroesophageal sphincter and prevents reflux. How come my mild gastritis won't heal if I don't have bacteria no NSAID, on bland diet, taking Carafate (sucralfate) PPIs??? 3 months in pain.

No longer mild: The pain pattern is critical in establishing the diagnosis, before or after meals, periods of high stress, etc. How was your diagnosis made? In case you did not have an upper endoscopy, you might need one. Would recommend that you keep a log with the type of food/ drinks that you ingest and the timing/character of your pain and bring it to your follow-up visit. ...Read more

Why most of the doctors prefer to use ppis to "treat" (hide the symptoms) gerd, gastritis and ulcers instead of misopostrol that is a way less harmful?

Think again...: First, I'm not sure what you mean by "way less harmful." neither drug is side effect free. Second, ppi's effect healing of peptic damage, not just "hide the symptoms." please refer to the many excellent healthtap answers regarding drug safety and efficacy, and of treatment options for gerd/gastritis/ulcers. ...Read more

Yes: How was the diagnosis made? Depending on presence of h pylori or not, you may need in addition antibiotics. Avoid nsaids and smoking. The brief diagnosis use of protons inhibitors or h2 blockers are relatively safe. ...Read more

Do all ppis have insomnia as a side effect? Taking Prilosec for gastritis; it caused insomnia even though taking lunesta (eszopiclone) for primary insomnia. Thanks.

Unlikely: Just about any medication could theoretically affect your sleep however often the side effects listed for drugs come from things patients report during clinical trials which may or may not be from the drug. Personally I don't believe ppis cause insomnia and there may be something else at play with your sleep. ...Read more

If I have gastritis or an ulcer, will the PPIs always help? I've been taking pantoprazole for a month, and I'm still experiencing stomach burning.

If I have gastritis or an ulcer, will the PPIs always help? I've been taking pantoprazole for a month, and I'm still experiencing stomach burning.

Return to your doc.: If you are still having symptoms after one month of a PPI, you should return to your doctor to see if further testing needs to be done, or if you need a different medication or a change in the dosage of the current one. In the meantime, it will not hurt to add over-the-counter antacids, such as Tums, (calcium carbonate) to your regimen. Good luck. ...Read more

Why most of doctors prefer to use ppis to treat gastritis and ulcers instead of misopostrol that has no side effects such c-diff, impotence, ibs...?

PPI's are safer: Misoprostol is less effective in healing peptic ulcers than ppi's. The drug was initially released only to prevent ulcerations from Aspirin and other anti-inflammatory agents. It frequently causes diarrhea and can easily cause a spontaneous abortion in early pregnancy. Misoprostol is not likely to help heartburn. ...Read more

Abdominal pain: Your various and detailed testing only showed gastritis but your ongoing pain combined with significant weight loss suggests more than gastritis going on. I recommend a gastroscopy with special attention to areas of the stomach where some gastric ulcers-benign or malignant are difficult to visualize. If you've already had a gastroscopy I recommend another one for thoroughness. ...Read more

I've been diagnosed with gastritis but my PPI doesn't seem to be helping this time. I have awful burning pain in my upper abdomen. What else can I try?

Gastritis: The usual treatment for gastritis is antacids and medications that decrease the production of acid in your stomach. I assume you are on these medications. You can buy them yourself in the pharmacy. Omeprazole is an example of medication you can buy over the counter. If despite these medications you continue to have symptoms, you need to see a gastroenterologist and have endoscopy. ...Read more

Can 1mos use of Prevacid (lansoprazole) cause iron/b12 deficiency? Or is it more likely caused by atrophic gastritis for which PPI was prescribed?

Atrophic gastritis: Prevacid (lansoprazole) can cause b12 deficiency or pernicious anemia, but it's limited moreso to the elderly. Atrophic gastritis has a clearer association and can be a cause of pernicious anemia from low b12. Iron level measurements are often changed with anemia, but neither Prevacid (lansoprazole), nor atrophic gastritis seem to cause iron deficiency directly. ...Read more
