I've been on Nexium (esomeprazole) for 17 years and stopped it a few weeks ago. Before i started it i had gastric and duodenal ulcers. Will these return?

Possibly: Ulcers in the duodenum and stomach are usually caused by excess acid production. Nexium (esomeprazole) lowers acid production and thus decreases ulcer formation. Stopping Nexium (esomeprazole) may cause ulcers to form due to increase acid production. After 17 years, your body may have charged and ulcers may not form after stopping nexium (esomeprazole). Besides interfering with B12 absorption, the stomach can develop atrophic gastritis, an inflammation of the stomach that results in the loss of all glandular tissue and scarring of the stomach. But ulcers are not a sign of this, and definitely not duodenal ulcers. The B12 problems come first, other stomach issues later. ...Read more
