I lost hair after my gastric bypass 10 years ago. Any chance it was biotin lack, and if I start taking biotin now could it grow back?

Hair loss: It is difficult to know why you lost your hair unless your vitamin levels were checked routinely back then and you can check your records. It is possible to grow it back by making sure all your vitamin levels are normal, you take biotin, and use hair restoration products. ...Read more

Could you tell me what happens ten years after a gastric bypass?

Could you tell me what happens ten years after a gastric bypass?

10yrs after bypass: Hopefully nothing. We hope that your bypass anatomy stays the same and that you maintain your weight loss. People can regain weight if they overeat, eat junk food, or don't exercise. You have to constantly work at it. Sometimes the weight gain is due to stretching of the pouch or anastomosis or both. In general though, people do fine 10 years out from surgery. ...Read more

I had a gastric bypass 2 years ago. Is it safe to perform a 10 day cleanse?

I had a gastric bypass 2 years ago. Is it safe to perform a 10 day cleanse?

Clean is good: If you mean a 10 day meal replacement with a balanced low sugar shake like medifast or glucose-controlled boost (plus all vitamins) it should be ok. However, the best diet to work with a bypass is a solid meal (protein and veggies) with no sipping, fewer slider foods, no sweets and no bad snacks. Might be good to check with your surgeon and program. ...Read more

I used to eat roux and had gastric bypass 8 years ago. I lost 120 lbs in a year. In the succeeding years, I have gained back 45 lbs. What should I do?

Regain weight bypass: There are many reasons why you may have regained weight. It can be your habits like eating too much, poor food choices, not enough exercise, etc., or it can be an anatomical problem with a stretched pouch, a dilated anastomosis, a gastro-gastric fistula, or some combination of all of these. You need to see a bariatric surgeon that specializes in revisions and get an UGI and egd. ...Read more

I had gastric bypass 3 years ago, after which I was diagnosed with a stricture. It seemed to resolve on its own but problems seem to return, possible?

Yes, can recur.: Yes, stricture is a term that describes narrowing within the g-i tract. Could be caused by excessive scar formation at the site of a surgically created connection. There are two of these connections in a patient with a gastric bypass. The symptoms could be intermittent, but at some point the narrowing could lead to partial or complete blockage. Endoscopy or radiology could help to evaluate. ...Read more

Where is the pain?: You did not describe where your pain is. Either way, consider consulting a GI doctor if pain related to your intestine and bowels (e.g. Eating, defecation). If pain is on the surface, a trapped nerve is possible and should see a pain management doctor for further evaluation and treatment. ...Read more

Why has the rate of gastric bypass surgery increased so drastically in recent years?

Why has the rate of gastric bypass surgery increased so drastically in recent years?

Quick fix: People are generally looking for the fastest way to do something, requiring the least amount of effort and time. Like any other weight loss surgery, over time, you can find a way to beat it. Losing weight the old fashioned way, diet, exercise, and life style modification is the long term way to success. ...Read more

I had gastric bypass 5 years ago. I lost 100lbs, but have gained 50 lbs back. Might I be a candidate for revision surgery?

Eating behavior KEY: Tips for eating success: don't drink fluids with meals (washes food down); avoid high fat snacks (chips, crackers, peanut butter); avoid sugar, eat more solid food that "packs your pouch", avoid too many slider foods that go right through. Can also see your surgeon for endoscopy or solid meal UGI to check size of pouch and pouch outflow size. ...Read more

I am 25 years. I weigh 224 an I am thinking about doing a gastric bypass to lose weight. Do u think that's a good choice for me?

Gastric bypass: That depends on your height. If you are 5'3" and have no medical problems, you would qualify. If you are 5'7" and have medical problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, asthma, gerd, etc., you would also still qualify. It is all dependent on your body mass index (bmi). You need a bmi greater than 40 if healthy, or greater than 35 if you have medical problems. ...Read more

I've had gastric bypass almost 3 years ago so I either chew my mess or crush them but I have noticed my tongue is getting raw, how can I help this?

Unrelated: This seems to be unrelated to the bypass, and may be secondary to something you're consuming. Try keeping a log of what you take in, and correlate that to the symptom gettin better or worse. If you're getting worse, or this persists, see your primary care provider for a proper evaluation. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Most of my health issues started in last several years. My surgeon insists it has nothing to do with my gastric bypass 8 years ago. Any thoughts?

Need information: In the vast majority of bariatric situations, the health benefit is big and easy to access. If you did not have health benefit, and your health issues are linked in time to your bariatric surgery, then check in with your regular doc. Depending on your issues, proper evaluation with testing and imaging you will get to a diagnosis/answer. Good luck. ...Read more

I had gastric bypass 5 years ago, now I have fibromyalgia with associated neurological deficits does anyone have experience with managing this post gb?

My legs are bowing. I had gastric bypass surgery 10 years ago. Could this be the cause.

My legs are bowing. I had gastric bypass surgery 10 years ago. Could this be the cause.

No: Bowing of your legs is due, most likely, to arthritis, not to the gastric surgery. Increased weight can cause increased joint wear and changes in your mechanical axis. The weight reduction likely is currently reducing your symptoms, but arthritis and mechanical axis malalignment is common in the general population in your age group. ...Read more

12 years post op rny, iron 20 & vitamin d at 10. Seeing a new dr that hasn't worked with deficient gastric bypass, is 325ferrous 3x and 2000d 1x okay?

Nutrition!: A gastric bypass is a very complex nutrition situation. If your physician has not dealt with it much I would suggest asking for a referral to a nutritionist or a bariatric center. That being said, the dosage of iron is fda approved treatment for iron deficiency, and the vitamin d is a reasonable amount. You have many nutrient levels that should be monitored and carefully watched! ...Read more

If needed- your primary care doctor can refer you to see a hematologist. Severe joint pain likely is unrelated to the gastirc by pass/vit B12 deficiency etc. Further evaluation should be done to know what is going on. Start with your pmd. Take care. ...Read more

I had gastric bypass surgery about 5 years ago, how many calories should I eat a day?

8-9 calories per lb: We have been doing indirect calorimetey on postop bariatric patients. We are finding a total metabolism of about 8-9 calories per pound. So, if you are now 200 lb, them you would ear about 1700 cal per day to maintain your weight. If you wanted to lose wt, then you can eat 1200-1400 cal per day. Eating 400 fewer cal per day would allow you to lose 1 pound in 9 days (3500 cal for 1 lb). ...Read more

Have taken lyrica (pregabalin) for 6 years for nerve pain. About to have gastric bypass and worried about whether i'll be able to continue with lyrica (pregabalin) afterwards.

You certainly Can: The other thing to consider is that some of your weight may be due to the lyrica (pregabalin). If you go through the trouble of the bypass restarting the Lyrica (pregabalin) could put you back on the road to obesity. I would approach it with caution after the bypass, if you need it for pain control you'll have to take the Lyrica (pregabalin) but beware of the side effects. ...Read more
