Don't worry: These critters are all over the place and "infection" happens only when they overgrow for a time. They're very unlikely to be a problem for the man. ...Read more

I have had no sex since 2008, but recently was diagnosed with GARDNERELLA. How is this possible?

Not an STD: Apparently you have bacterial vaginosis. Gardnerella is one of many bacteria that overgrow in BV; it was once thought to be the cause, but probably is not. BV usually is not an STD. Although most frequent in sexually active women, it is common in others. If you douche, that might be the cause. Probably you are being treated with metronidazole, which should clear it up. ...Read more

Normal in vagina: Gardnerella (full name Gardnerella vaginalis) is a normal bacteria in the vagina of most women. When a woman has bacterial vaginosis, Gardnerella is one of the bacteria that grows to abnormal levels and at one time was thought to be the cause of BV. What is the gardnerella treatment?

What is the gardnerella treatment?

Metronadizole/Flagyl: You are referring to bacterial vaginosis. I would recommend the standard treatment of oral or vaginal flagyl. Intravaginal boric acid 600 mg at bed time provides symptomatic relief. The frequency can be gradually decreased to once or twice a week. You could try a probiotic preparation such as vsl #3 with 110 billion colonies of probiotic bacteria per capsule, but this therapy is unproven. ...Read more

Why do I need multiple treatments for gardnerella?

See below: Bacterial vaginosis is a synergistic infection involving gardnerella vaginalis and a number of other bacteria. It is treated with Metronidazole oral or intravaginal treatment. What's the treatment for ureaplasma? And recurrent gardnerella infection?

Bacterial vaginosis?: Ureaplasma is normal in female genital tract, rarely any need to test and if a test is positive, usually no treatment required. Gardnerella is also normal, but "recurrent gardnerella infection" suggests bacterial vaginosis. BV is overgrowth of mostly normal bacteria, including Gardnerella. The usual treatment is metronidazole (Flagyl®) by mouth. No other antibiotic is needed because of Ureaplasma. ...Read more

Last 2 mo.S i've had external vaginal redness itching & internal sharp pain. Gyno said was yeast infection then gardnerella & no relief. Suggestions?

What treatment?: Some treatments are more effective than others, and sometimes you can have resistant yeast or bacteria that doesn't respond 100% to the treatment you've been given. I would get re-tested to confirm infection and see if there is a way to get antibiotic "sensitivities" on the organisms that grow. In addition, you may want to find a vaginal probiotic supplement/suppository to build up your defenses. ...Read more

Confusing...: I'd like to help, but Gardnerella is a normal bactera in the vagina. It doesn't infect men and there no is accurate way to diagnose it in men. I wonder if your partner has nongonococcal urethritis (NGU). It's an STD, even though standard STD tests (gonorrhea, chlamyida, etc) are negative. You and he should find a doctor who understands STDs and genital infections. Good luck! ...Read more

Bacterial Vaginosis: Gardnerella Vaginalis is the organism involved in bacterial vaginosis. There is a possibility your partner may have it as well and I recommend having your partner tested. Oral metronidazole therapy (flagyl) is commonly for 7 days. After the 7-day treatment course you should be able to have intercourse without posing any risk of infection to your partner. ...Read more

I've just been diagnosed with gardnerella vaginitis & a yeast infection. I was given diflucan (fluconazole) & flagyl. Should my husband be treated also?

No: These are not expressly sexually transmitted infections. The pathophysiology has more to do with the micro-environment of your vagina that allows overgrowth of what some would argue are normally commensal flora. Diflucan (fluconazole) is for the yeast and Flagyl is for the gardnerella spp. ...Read more

Possible candida..: If you were not treated for a fungal infection as well it might be possible that both infections were happening at the same time which happens not uncommonly. Clotrimazole over the counter for example can help with symptoms. If not better get seen again with your GYN provider. ...Read more
