Can you tell me about the ganglion cyst surgery procedure?

Can you tell me about the ganglion cyst surgery procedure?

Excision: Involves excision of the cyst dissecting it free from the surrounding tissues. Most important factor to prevent recurrence is to completely remove the neck of the ganglion that extends down into the joint. Surgery is usually done under iv regional block or general anesthetic, in some cases local can be an option. Post immobilization for 2-3 weeks reduces recurrence rate.

What will happen to me during a ganglion cyst removal surgery?

Another option: Arthroscopic-assisted ganglion excision is minimally invasive, relatively painless, and has a lower reported recurrence rate. Typically performed under general anethesia, and through small portals, the ganglion stalk can be visualized and excised with precision instrumentation. The cyst can then be decompressed through an accessory portal. Local anesthesia is placed over the portal sites.

Is it okay to wear a sling after a ganglion cyst removal surgery?

Yes: Usually a sling isn't necessary. What you need is a wrist braces so that you do not bend your wrist until the ganglion has a chance to heal. They don't heal very fast so I would give it 6-8 weeks with the splint on all of the time and another month with the splint only if you are going to be using your hands a lot.

Is there another way to remove a ganglion/ganglion cyst apart from surgery? I've already operated once and it's coming back.

Is there another way to remove a ganglion/ganglion cyst apart from surgery? I've already operated once and it's coming back.

Nope: You can have it drained, but ganglions come back more often after drainage than after surgical removal. Drainage involves the doctor sticking the ganglion with a needle and aspirating the thick fluid out with a syringe. Good luck.
