Doctor insights on:
I just started Neurontin (gabapentin) 300mg & am supposed to increase to 900mg a day. How do I divide my dose?
Suggestions: Neurontin (gabapentin) or Gabapentin has a relatively short half-life and is best taken 3 times daily, about every 8 hrs. Maximum effective dose is about a total of 3600 mg daily. Slow titration done to allow fewer adverse reactions. Would suggest you first go to 300mg twice daily for 3 or 4 days and then 300 mg every 8 hrs. Do contact your doctor and get explicit directions as to how to proceed from there. ...Read more
Gabapentin SEs: Sedation is a common side effect of gabapentin. Each person will be somewhat different in their sensitivity to this SE -- but it does occur. Some patients may adjust to the medication dose, and find sedation less problematic with time. Or perhaps taking most of the dose at bed would help. Contact your prescribing MD to arrive at the best solution for your particular case & be well! :) ...Read more
I've been on Neurontin (gabapentin) 300mg twice a day due to cervical hnp for about 4months. Planning to decrease dosage. Any suggestion?
Decrease slowly: You should decrease it slowly (maybe decrease to 150mg twice a day first) to see if discontinuing it will make your pain worse. If you pain starts to come back then you need more time with the medication. ...Read more
Is it safe for me to take two capsules of gabapentin 300mg together or should I only take one in morning+1 at night, I forgot 2 take it in morning?
Yes: Generally Gabapentin is a short-acting medication, so the morning dose won't help very much with evening symptoms. If you forgot to take it in the morning, you can take it whenever you realize you forgot to take it. Then take the next one at your next scheduled time. The only side effect at these doses is slight sedation. ...Read more
Can Gabapentin 300mg capsule be opened and taken with pudding? It is not extended release. Is it safe?
Gabapentin capsules: Gabapentin caps can generally be opened and mixed with jam, honey, or apple sauce without significant change in effect from swallowing the capsule whole. A single dose should be mixed and then swallowed directly, not mixed in advance. If you're considering changes to your med regimen, you should always discuss with your prescribing doc first -- so give him/her a buzz & be well :) ...Read more

Talk to prescriber: You are on a very small dose and getting off should be simple. However, you are on it for some reason. Talk to doctor who prescribed it to determine how to get off and what to do instead. ...Read more
My mom started gabapentin 300mg tonight and woke up an he after with uncontrollable crying, why? And how do we get it out of her system?
The medication will eventually metabolize out of her system. Be sure to contact her MD immediately to inform of the side effect to get the best advice on stopping the medication as I don't know what medical condition is being treated. Emotional side effects - including suicidal thoughts - are uncommon but can happen. Stay with her - reassure her - and encourage sleep.

Taking gabapentin 300mg three times a day for meralgia paresthetica. Started six days ago. No relief. How long before this stuff kicks in?
Are we there yet?: You're pretty close to when you should be feeling something with that particular dose. I tend to titrate people rather slowly (1 pill escalate weekly) so it depends how your doctor told you to ramp this medication up but if you've been going 3x/day right from the get go then, maybe a few more days to a week at best. If you're no better then, either the dose is too low or medication inadequate. ...Read more

I was prescribed gabapentin 300mg 3x a day and 37.5 Effexor (venlafaxine) in the morning. Can I take Nyquil and/or Benadryl at night?
Med combo: You need to be careful about being overly sedated (drowsy, unable to drive or operate heavy machinery etc)... Especially with a neurontin / Benadryl (diphenhydramine) combo... Make sure your prescribing doc is informed about your addition of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) / NyQuil BEFORE you implement this change! ...Read more

Is gabapentin 300mg normally prescribed for prurigo nodularis? Is it ok to combine with topiramate used for depression/anxiety disorder?
No: Neurontin (gabapentin) is good for neuritic pain. However, it has also been used for seizures. Topamax (topiramate) is primarily for seizures but is being used for migraine and by some psychiatrists for mood. This makes things complicated. Too many of these meds may cause complications. Both can cause sleepiness and feeling dopey and can cause nausea and depression. ...Read more
